MultiVersus Has Underperformed, Says Warner Bros.
As a long-time enthusiast of Warner Bros.’ gaming ventures, I must admit that this year has been a rollercoaster ride – more like one of those old-school wooden coasters with the steep drops and unexpected twists! The underperformance of MultiVersus and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has left me scratching my head, wondering if there’s some cosmic force at play that’s causing these missteps.
It’s been disclosed that the free-to-play fighting game, MultiVersus, hasn’t met expectations in terms of performance by Warner Bros. Discovery.
During a financial earnings call, CEO David Zaslav spoke about the game, saying:
It’s clear that our gaming business is currently falling short of its full potential. This quarter alone, we had to account for an additional $100 million loss due to underperforming game launches, with MultiVersus being the main contributor. As a result, this year has seen a total write-off of over $300 million in our gaming sector, which is a significant factor behind the drop in studio profits.
An additional $200 million in losses Zaslav mentions are linked to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that, despite Rocksteady’s extensive efforts over time, was not as successful or impressive as many anticipated.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “In my take on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, you might be surprised to find that it’s not as hopeless as it seems. There are some fantastic concepts and satisfying shooter gameplay mechanics at play here. The climax could use a bit more oomph, but the narrative journey is an exhilarating rollercoaster ride while it lasts.
In any event, it’s been a bit of a tough year for Warner Bros. Discovery’s gaming efforts.
