After nearly two decades, the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering is returning to the fan-favorite world of Lorwyn. To celebrate, Wizards of the Coast has partnered with The Jim Henson Company to create a special promotional video.
The YouTube video, “The Ballad of Squen and Cragg,” was created to advertise the January 23rd launch of Lorwyn Eclipsed. It features the two goblin characters singing about their contrasting homes: the beautiful, bright world of Lorwyn and the always-dark realm of Shadowmoor.
Currently, in the story of Magic: The Gathering, the worlds of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor exist in different places. This distance drives the main idea behind a charming video, where a goblin named Squen from Lorwyn wonders about life on Shadowmoor, and a goblin named Cragg from Shadowmoor wonders about life on Lorwyn.
Magic: The Gathering’s New Lorwyn Video Proves Wizards Still Cares About Universes Within
Commissioning Such An Impressive Trailer Is a Good Sign For Wizards’ Faith in Lorwyn Eclipsed
The new trailer for Lorwyn Ecclipsed is beautifully made, and Jim Henson Studios was an excellent pick to bring the magical, dreamlike worlds of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor to life.
The trailer isn’t just visually appealing; it clearly shows Wizards of the Coast is committed to making the new set a hit.
Many dedicated Magic: The Gathering players are currently worried about how Wizards of the Coast is prioritizing its in-game worlds. The popularity and strong sales of sets featuring properties from other universes – like Final Fantasy – combined with the growing number of these sets each year, are leading players to feel that Magic‘s original world is being neglected.
As a Magic player, I noticed a lot of us were getting pretty concerned about the spoilers for Lorwyn Ecclipsed. Usually, we get two or three weeks of previews, but this time it’s only a week! Plus, they’ve already started showing off cards from the Universes Beyond sets like Marvel Superheroes and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It really feels like Wizards is intentionally overshadowing Lorwyn Ecclipsed, and a lot of players think it’s getting a bit shortchanged.
Okay, I’m starting to feel a little better about the Lorwyn refresh after seeing the newest trailer! It’s obvious they really put a ton of work into it, and the fact that they brought in Jim Henson Studios – that doesn’t come cheap, you know – makes me think this could actually be something special.
Lorwyn Eclipsed Has All the Makings Of a Hit

Along with the preview of puppet trailers, Wizards of the Coast announced a first look stream for the Lorwyn Eclipsed set. The trailer highlighted several cards with unique designs that boost popular classic decks like Goblins, Elves, and Merfolk, and also provides new support for older strategies, such as Kithkin, that haven’t received new cards in a long time.
It’s hard to say how well the Lorwyn Eclipsed set will do. Sets like Tarkir Dragonstorm successfully brought older worlds back into focus, and players are hoping Wizards can do the same with this return to Lorwyn.
The recent trailer for Lorwyn Eclipsed is visually stunning, but it remains to be seen how Magic: The Gathering will handle future in-universe set releases.
