Kirk, an influential figure who stood firm with Trump and was well-known among extreme right-wing circles, tragically lost his life during a shooting incident while he addressed a large audience at Utah Valley University.

Instantly, social media erupted with strong reactions following Dowd’s comments, which implied that Kirk’s long-standing provocative statements might have contributed to the shooting incident.

MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler issued an apology Wednesday night.

During our live reporting on the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd expressed remarks that were indefensible, thoughtless, and intolerable, according to Kutler’s statement. Violence has no place in American society, whether it stems from politics or any other source.

According to reports, Dowd was disconnected from the network, as per an informed source who was not allowed to speak publicly about it.

Later, on Bluesky, Dowd expressed sympathies to Charlie Kirk’s family and friends, stating that he was prompted to respond to a question about the current situation. He regrets the harshness of his words and wants to make it clear that he in no way meant to imply that Kirk was responsible for this terrible incident. His comments were not intended as blame.
