MPL Malaysia to transition into franchise model after Season 16

The upcoming MPL MY Season 16 marks the final installment using the traditional legacy format, as it’s set to transition into a franchise system for subsequent seasons.

Starting with Season 17, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Malaysia (MPL MY) is making an official switch to a franchise system. This move away from the current format marks the last season for which the region will adhere to its traditional structure.

In April 2025, Fikri Rizal Mahruddin, the esports lead at MOONTON Games Malaysia, subtly foreshadowed this shift. Consequently, MPL Malaysia is expected to align with other franchise leagues, like those established in the Philippines and Indonesia. This move might pave the way for a development league to emerge in the region once it adopts the franchise format.

Blue-chip partnerships signal confidence in Malaysia’s MLBB esports scene

next season, Mobile Legend’s Pro League (MPL MY) will step into its franchise league for the first time, supported by numerous brands. This development coincides with the remarkable expansion of MLBB esports in Malaysia, which has recently set new records. As per Esports Charts, MPL Malaysia stands among the global leaders in the most-watched esports leagues, boasting a peak viewership of 870,000 last year.

For the upcoming stage, MPL Malaysia is collaborating with a remarkable collection of leading companies from the fields of telecommunications, technology, lifestyle, and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG): a diverse group of top-tier brands.

  • CelcomDigi joins as the Official League Presenter from Season 16 to 18. This is the first time a national telco giant has sponsored an esports league.
  • Infinix extends its support until Season 18, with the Infinix GT 30 Pro named the Official Gaming Smartphone.
  • Yamaha enters esports for the first time as Official Motorcycle Partner for Seasons 16 and 17, marking its global debut in competitive gaming.
  • Grab Malaysia steps in as the Official Food Delivery Partner, bringing its GrabFood For One service closer to fans.
  • Fairrie returns as Official Rewards Partner.
  • 100PLUS continues as the Official Isotonic Drink Partner.
  • CeraVe and Playaz join as Strategic Partners for Season 16.

These alliances demonstrate the evolution of MPL Malaysia from a simple competitive gaming league, into a vibrant cultural and entertainment force that captivates well-known household brands.
