MPL Malaysia considers franchise model: What does this mean for the future of the league?
It’s possible that MPL Malaysia could adopt a franchise system, similar to what some other Mobile Legends: Bang Bang leagues have already implemented.
After the triumph of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) in Indonesia (ID) and the Philippines (PH), it seems that Malaysia (MY) is set to embrace the franchise league model next.
As reported by Fikri Rizal Mahruddin, who leads esports at MOONTON Games Malaysia, they are contemplating a change to a franchise league format for their local league. For the time being, though, spectators will need to pay an entrance fee to watch matches live during MPL MY Season 15. This is intended to improve the overall experience for fans in the future.
MPL MY looking to follow ID and PH franchise league
During a team discussion, Mahruddin outlined strategies aimed at strengthening the competitive landscape of MLBB esports in Malaysia. To kick things off, they’re giving thoughtful consideration to adopting a franchise system similar to that of Indonesia and the Philippines for their local tournaments.
By examining MPL Indonesia and MPL Philippines, it’s clear that the franchising model offers significant benefits. For one, it offers teams greater stability and financial assurance by extending their time to secure investments and beneficial partnerships. Additionally, this model creates a more organized environment for athletes to chase their aspirations. Ultimately, it contributes to a more enduring esports ecosystem as a whole.
He made it clear that MPL MY might not exactly mirror the franchise league structures found in ID and PH. Nevertheless, they plan to draw insights and utilize data from both leagues to create a customized model suitable for Malaysia’s distinctive environment.
MPL MY charges tickets for season 15 to help enhance fan experience
Previously, MPL MY Season 14 experienced an impressive surge in audience engagement last year. Based on Esports Charts’ statistics, the tournament attracted approximately 812,911 peak viewers. The match that garnered the most attention was the grand finals series between Selangor Red Giants (SRG), who recently teamed up with OG, and Team Vamos, a rapidly growing local team.
Due to the impressive performance of the league during the previous season, Mahruddin explained that MPL MY plans to implement ticket sales for an improved fan experience when watching tournament matches. The revenue generated from these tickets will be used to further boost the quality of the event.
By doing this, we aim to enhance the standard of our gatherings, enrich the spectator’s engagement, and boost the prestige of the league, not only locally in Malaysia, but also on a global scale.
Mahruddin went on to say that he understands some members of the community may react differently to this route, but he remains confident that these supporters are invested in MPL Malaysia’s success and desire to see it flourish even more.
I believe it’s crucial for us to proceed with this action, as it contributes to enhancing the local ecological system in Malaysia. Additionally, this move aligns with our long-term plan to position Malaysia among the world’s top ecosystems and lead the esports ecosystem within the country.
The cost for tickets to the upcoming MPL MY Season 15 tournament is set at 10 Malaysian Ringgit (equivalent to around $2 USD). According to Ticket2U records, the match between SRG.OG and Team Vamos has already been sold out. Despite whether admission is free or not, fans continue to show their dedication to backing their favorite teams, with excitement levels remaining high.
What a Franchise League Could Mean for MPL Malaysia
Considering a transition to a franchise system, similar to what has proven successful for fellow Southeast Asian competitors, MPL Indonesia (MPL ID) and MPL Philippines (MPL PH). Examining the impact on these regions offers an understanding of potential advantages for MPL MY.
One advantage of playing in a franchise league is that it offers job stability for athletes. In this setup, players receive consistent salaries and defined contract lengths, reducing the unpredictability commonly associated with conventional tournament arrangements. This makes it less likely for them to be let go during the season, enabling them to concentrate on improvement and performance without being constantly worried about instability.
Furthermore, franchising allows enthusiasts to back their preferred teams in innovative ways, even within the gameplay itself. For instance, we see this through the integration of MPL-inspired recalls, emotes, and other visual enhancements. Each season, fans can buy these team-specific products, with a percentage of the profits being donated to the respective organizations. This not only boosts fan interaction but also offers teams an extra source of income.
When MPL MY adopts a franchise system, it’s reasonable to anticipate the rise of an Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Development League (MDL). In this scenario, MPL organizations would create their own teams of amateurs and nurture their skills in separate tournaments with distinct formats. This league serves as a nursery for upcoming talent that can be moved to the professional league by esports organizations when needed.
