“Moving” period drama based on “extraordinary” true story now trending on Netflix

If you’re a lover of the SAS Rogue Heroes series, but haven’t yet watched Jack O’Connell’s other World War II drama, Netflix is currently offering you an opportunity to do so – and it’s currently among the top ten trending shows in the UK.

The 2013 film, Unbroken, is captivating not only because it recounts Louie Zamperini’s athletic career (as an Olympic runner who excelled in the 5000m race) but also due to his harrowing wartime ordeals that make for a truly inspiring narrative.

In 1943, during a rescue operation, Zamperini (portrayed by O’Connell) encountered an unexpected fate when his plane was hit and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. He along with two others survived and boarded a life raft. After an arduous journey of 47 days amidst shark-filled waters, only two of them remained alive. Eventually, they were captured by the Japanese.

That was just the beginning of their hardships.

In a natural and easy-to-read manner, here is how I would rephrase the given sentence: Domhnall Gleeson portrays his character, ‘Phil’ Phillips, who is a fellow survivor, and he lost so much weight for this role that he claimed his eyeballs actually shrank.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, he explained that as he approached the stage of dehydration, it became necessary for him to wear contact lenses due to his eyes becoming red. He added that because of his extreme dehydration and significant weight loss, the contact lenses no longer fit properly. Despite this, they continued to try forcing them onto his eyes.

At the hands of the commander of the prisoner-of-war camp he was assigned to, Zamperini experienced persistent torment. His resilience amidst adversity served as a beacon of hope for those around him and repeatedly goaded the guards who aimed to crush his resistance.

This film boasts a distinguished background: it was penned by the Coen brothers, Richard LaGravenese known for ‘The Horse Whisperer’, and William Nicholson famous for ‘Gladiator’. The director is Angelina Jolie.

Entertainment Weekly described it as both moving and admirable, with moments that were thrilling, whereas Hollywood Reporter referred to it as an exceptional tale of survival.
