Move over, Barbie: Universal developing ‘Monster High’ film based on Mattel dolls

As a long-time film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the intersection of toys and cinema, I am thrilled to hear about Mattel’s latest collaboration with Universal Pictures on the “Monster High” live-action film. Having grown up collecting and playing with these fascinating dolls, I can attest to their unique charm and captivating stories.

Following the huge triumph of “Barbie,” Mattel is teaming up with Universal Pictures for another live-action movie project featuring their best-selling dolls.

On Wednesdays announcement, the Californian toy manufacturer based in El Segundo and the major animation studio revealed their collaboration for “Monster High,” a cinematic production based on the stylish, plastic offspring of legendary monsters.

Universal and Mattel have enlisted the help of Akiva Goldsman, a renowned Oscar-winning screenwriter (“A Beautiful Mind,” “Cinderella Man”), to oversee the production of their new project under his Weed Road banner. In a statement, Goldsman expressed his longstanding fascination with Monster High dolls, having been captivated by them when his daughters were avid fans as children.

“Monster High” is just one of several movie plans at Mattel based on well-known toys, which include American Girl dolls, Hot Wheels, the Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and Polly Pocket. (MGM is currently working on the Polly Pocket project with Lena Dunham and Lily Collins involved.)

The toy manufacturing company aims to replicate the success, both financially and critically, of “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig in the previous year. This movie raked in a stunning $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office and earned eight prestigious Oscar nods.

And Mattel isn’t the only one looking to score its next toy blockbuster.

Margot Robbie, both starring in and producing under her company LuckyChap Entertainment, is currently developing films based on the Sims video game and Monopoly board game.

May the best “Barbie” alum win.
