Motsi Mabuse mourns the death of Dancing With The Stars' Michaela DePrince who passed away at just 29

As I read about the untimely passing of the remarkable Mia DePrince, I find myself utterly devastated and profoundly moved by her story. Her journey from a malnourished orphan in Africa to a trailblazing ballerina who touched countless hearts is nothing short of miraculous.

On a sorrowful note, Motsi Mabuse shared her grief on Instagram following the announcement of Michaela DePrince‘s passing at the tender age of 29, which occurred earlier that Friday.

Besides being a judge on the American version of Strictly Come Dancing, Sierra Leonean ballerina Michaela also featured in Beyoncé’s Lemonade visual album.

43-year-old Motsi posted a monochrome image of the dancer, accompanied by the phrases ‘Dancing Angel’ and ‘Rest in Power: Michaela Mabinity DePrince (age 29)’, as reported by The Mirror.

She posted this message as a caption: ‘What a tragic loss. Farewell, dear one! I still recall our chance encounter in Amsterdam; you were an inspiration then and continue to be for many. Departed far too early.’

Motsi concluded her homage by sharing a video snippet, featuring Michaela gracefully dancing on an American sidewalk.

I received the heartbreaking news about Michaela through a post shared by her team on Instagram. Incidentally, the last message she posted was on August 9th.

She simply added a peace symbol emoji as her caption, while donning a complete black Nike outfit, standing tall.

Connected with the post is the soulful tune “Better” by Khalid, whose lyrics include: ‘There’s nothing that feels as good as this, there’s nothing that feels better.’ (Paraphrased)

The dancer’s death comes just one week after her adoptive mother, Elaine ‘Mamma E’ DePrince, also died, with the ballerina’s sister Mia DePrince announcing the family tragedy on her Instagram.

The family of Mamma E and the young ballet dancer, who gained a multitude of admirers by recounting her tale of being an orphan escaping violence in Sierra Leone to achieve international fame, have not yet provided an explanation for their deaths.

The retiring ballerina’s last Instagram post showcases an additional image of her wearing a more athletic, gray and white Nike-endorsed attire, gazing off into the horizon.

Following DePrince’s passing, the post flooded with sympathy messages.

Feeling deeply saddened by the news. We shared similar experiences, both being girls who were adopted at a young age and sharing a passion for dance. May you find eternal peace.

Another read: ‘I’m still in shock and not knowing what happened is even more heartbreaking.’

One user on Reddit said: ‘This one really hit me hard and I am not taking this very easy at all. I cried when she finally had her opportunity in Beyonce’s video. I cried at how proud of her I was. Still crying over this.’

Yesterday, Michaela’s sibling, Mia (age 30), likewise posted a heartwarming image on Instagram from their childhood days together.

‘I am utterly stunned and deeply saddened because my cherished sister is gone. From the early days in Africa, where we shared a mat at an orphanage, Michaela (Mabinty) and I would create our own musical theater performances and perform them together.’

The sister of the groundbreaking ballerina kept sharing heartfelt recollections from their shared past.

As a dedicated devotee, I’ve had the privilege to co-create our very own ballets. She, my partner in this art form, would meticulously choreograph each dance, while I, with my passion for music, took on the roles of composer and conductor. Our dreams were nurtured and fostered by our loving adoptive parents, giving rise to the stunningly graceful and powerfully strong ballerina that is known and admired by many today.

‘I love you, my beautiful Butterfly,’ the post concluded.

Originally known as Mabinty Mangura, this ballet dancer endured malnutrition and abuse during her initial years at an orphanage. At the tender age of four, she was fortunate enough to be adopted by a loving couple residing in New Jersey.

In their latest update on Friday, Michaela’s team stated that her artistry moved countless hearts, her spirit motivated numerous people, and she made a lasting impact not just on ballet but also far beyond it.

The statement conveyed that her life embodied elegance, intention, and fortitude. Her relentless devotion to her craft, her compassionate work for humanity, and her brave conquest of seemingly impossible obstacles will continue to captivate us in awe.

DePrince was an avid humanitarian often advocating for children affected by conflict and violence.

In a social media post, her sister revealed that she frequently traveled to developing nations serving as an ambassador for War Child Holland, where she conducted dance lessons for orphans and other children.

Instead of sending flowers, DePrince’s family requests that you consider making a donation to War Child, an organization that the renowned ballerina was fond of supporting.
