Diane Morgan and Paul Ready, who starred together in *Motherland*, are teaming up again for a new BBC comedy called *Ann Droid*. The show, set in 2029, centers on the surprising bond between Sue, an older widow, and Linda, her robotic assistant.
After her husband passed away, Sue’s son, Michael, decided to try and repair his marriage. However, when he moved out, he didn’t abandon his mother – he continued to support her.
Michael unexpectedly gives Sue a used AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot, telling her it’s meant to help her stay independent.
What to Read Next
This robot was designed to help reduce the burden on healthcare services by offering companionship and health monitoring for older people. Initially hesitant, a woman named Sue eventually finds the robot, Linda, surprisingly helpful and enjoyable.
Okay, so the story’s about Sue, and she’s seriously not thrilled with this new droid. It’s basically way too helpful and completely clueless about social cues – a real nuisance, honestly. But she quickly figures out she can use it to get back at people and finally get those annoying tasks done that my son keeps putting off. It’s kinda brilliant, actually.

The story unfolds as a heartwarming comedy about the unlikely friendship between an older woman and her robot companion, who’s a genius with technology but a bit awkward when it comes to social interactions.
Currently in production, the six-episode series – created by Morgan and Sarah Kendall – will be available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Morgan will play the role of a robot named Linda, and will be joined by Michael Ready, her co-star from *Motherland*, and Sue Johnston, known for *The Royle Family*.
Johnston expressed excitement about returning to BBC comedy, praising Diane and Sarah for creating a show with broad appeal. He’s eager to begin working on it.
Ready strongly advised anyone with the opportunity to collaborate with Diane Morgan to do so without hesitation. They expressed excitement about working with her again and revisiting the character of Michael in her acclaimed comedy series.
