Most Overwatch 2 players are in platinum rank, Blizzard reports

“Winnable, winnable, winnable!”

Overwatch 2’s latest update from Blizzard Entertainment includes details about the distribution of player ranks. It appears that most players are currently placed in the Platinum rank. Keep reading to learn more about Overwatch 2’s matchmaking and other updates.

Overwatch 2 rank distribution

As a gamer diving into Overwatch 2’s competitive scene, I’ve noticed some interesting stats. Around 34.9% of us are in the Platinum rank, making it a fairly common spot. Just behind that, you’ll find about 31.7% in Gold, followed by 14.9% in Diamond and 12.6% in Silver. It seems like Bronze is less populated with just 2.4%, but there are still more players here than those who have made it to Master rank at 3.2%. The Grandmaster and Champion ranks, however, are the least inhabited, with only 0.03% and less than 0.01%, respectively.

It’s significant to point out that the graph depicting the distribution of ranks in Overwatch 2 doesn’t include the divisions within each rank. In the game, there are five different divisions for every rank, such as Platinum 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This implies that a player at Platinum 1 is generally more skilled than one at Platinum 2, and so on. Consequently, the least rank in Overwatch is Bronze 5.

How does Overwatch 2 matchmaking work?

Overwatch 2 attempts to group together approximately ten players with similar skill levels when determining optimal team compositions. In cases where a perfect match cannot be created, the game adjusts as best it can to ensure a relatively even playing field.

One method they mentioned for balancing player skills is called Role Delta. This system works by trying to even out the ability levels of each role on both teams when it’s not possible to form a game where every player has an identical skill level (MMR).

For instance, if your squad’s tank’s Matchmaking Rating (MMR) is 1.5, the Role Delta system will endeavor to match you against an opposing tank with a similar MMR.

In competitive play, we strive to maintain a minimum 40% win ratio for any team, although this is rare. Typically, over 80% of matches in Competitive Role Queue have a win probability that falls between 45% and 55%.
