This action-packed adventure movie, brimming with humor, romance, and thrilling action sequences, showcases the exceptional storytelling prowess of Steven Spielberg – a testament to his knack for creating films that captivate audiences. Despite numerous actors eagerly wanting to collaborate with Steven Spielberg, Klaus Kinski flat-out refused the offer. In his memoirs, Kinski candidly shared his opinions about Raiders of the Lost Ark, and he didn’t sugarcoat his thoughts when discussing the script. He described it as a “dull, tedious heap of junk” and “ridiculously mediocre.” This seems like an intriguing disclosure; however, Kinski mentioned that he had expressed these sentiments to Spielberg himself. Although Raiders of the Lost Ark turned out to be a massive success, Kinski shows no regret in turning down the opportunity.

Throughout his career, Kinski showcased versatility across numerous genres and languages, but he is generally remembered for his collaborations with director Werner Herzog. Famous films like Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo have captivated global audiences. However, Kinski’s partnership with Herzog was marked by a notoriously volatile relationship, as the director often threatened to harm Kinski. The 1999 documentary My Best Friend provides an in-depth look at this complex bond, having been produced eight years after Kinski’s passing.

It might be fortunate for Spielberg that Kinski declined his offer, not just due to his notorious behavior on set, but also because Kinski’s involvement could have significantly altered the reputation of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. After turning down Spielberg, Kinski chose to star in Piers Haggard’s horror film “Venom”, which unfortunately turned out to be both a critical and commercial flop.

The British Actor Provides A Chilling Presence

In a different turn of phrase: Kinski might have become more renowned, yet Ronald Lacey’s portrayal in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was pitch-perfect. He skillfully created an unsettling aura throughout the film as Arnold Toht, often gazing blankly ahead with his lips compressed into a slimy sneer. By imbuing Toht with reptilian traits, Lacey perfectly captured the character’s role as a high-ranking Gestapo agent. Toht seems to revel in the gruesome and violent aspects of his duties. Unlike René Belloq, who is motivated by greed, or Colonel Dietrick, who aims to further the Nazi cause, Toht may have ascended through the ranks of the Gestapo due to his exceptional cruelty and relentlessness.

In films, Nazis are frequently depicted as emotionless bureaucrats who blindly follow orders or as violent, rage-filled entities. However, the character Toht in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is different. He’s not just a cold, heartless embodiment of Nazi evil but a soul-less entity that breathes the hateful ideology of Nazism completely. Lacey, the actor playing him, skillfully eliminates any hint of complexity while still making Toht feel familiar and relatable, emphasizing the moral conflict between good and evil at the heart of the story.
