You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who didn’t recognise Morgan Freeman’s signature voice.
Morgan Freeman’s distinctive deep voice, combined with his strong and authoritative speaking style, has made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors and voice-over talents, featured in iconic films like Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption.
Morgan Freeman’s excellent narration likely played a significant role in the 2005 documentary March of the Penguins winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature the next year.
Morgan Freeman, 88, is upset about the increasing use of AI to copy actors’ voices, including his own and the late James Earl Jones’. He feels this technology is taking away acting opportunities that he would have otherwise received.
He told The Guardian he was pretty upset. Like any actor, he doesn’t want people falsely imitating him, especially since he earns a living doing that kind of work. He feels it’s wrong for others to profit from his likeness without his involvement.
James Earl Jones previously allowed AI to recreate his iconic Darth Vader voice after finishing with Star Wars, but Morgan Freeman isn’t as willing to let that happen with his own voice.
He has good reason to be concerned, having found many instances where his voice was copied and used without his permission.
‘Well, I tell you, my lawyers have been very, very busy,’ he admitted.
It’s no surprise that veteran actor Morgan Freeman, who started his career in the 1960s, isn’t impressed with Tilly Norwood. Tilly is a completely made-up actress created using artificial intelligence by technologist Eline Van der Velden and was revealed earlier this year.
The creation of Norwood, the first actress generated using artificial intelligence, has understandably drawn criticism. This is especially true given that the increasing use of AI was a major issue during the 2023 writers’ strike that significantly impacted the entertainment industry.
Actors’ unions, guilds, and filmmakers have strongly protested the use of artificial intelligence in leading roles, arguing that AI shouldn’t be a primary performer in the acting industry.
The Screen Actors Guild stated on Tuesday that artistic work should always be driven by people, not technology.
The union clarified that ‘Tilly Norwood’ isn’t a real actor, but a computer-generated character. It was created using the work of many professional performers, who were not asked for permission or paid for its use.
The AI lacks real-life experience and genuine emotion, and audiences don’t seem to enjoy watching content that feels disconnected from human feelings and stories.

Tilly Norwood received a promotion from Van der Velden, who founded the AI production studio Particle6. The announcement was made at the Zurich Summit, an event held alongside the Zurich Film Festival.
She mentioned that talent agencies were interested in Norwood and anticipated announcing a deal with one shortly.
Freeman explained that audiences don’t connect with Norwood because she doesn’t feel authentic, and that lack of genuineness won’t translate well on screen, either in movies or on TV.
‘The union’s job is to keep actors acting, so there’s going to be that conflict.’
Despite current challenges, Freeman remains optimistic about the future and has no plans to retire, unlike his ‘Bucket List’ co-star, Jack Nicholson.
He admitted he’d occasionally think about retiring, but as soon as he heard about a potential job – an offer, or even just someone expressing interest – all those thoughts disappeared. He’d immediately start focusing on the practical details, like salary and location, just like he always did.
I still want to do it, though my enthusiasm has lessened slightly. It’s not enough of a change to really matter, though.
