I was completely hooked by the season 2 premiere of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters! It immediately threw us into the action with all sorts of incredible new monsters, both huge and smaller. One of them, Titan X, especially blew me away – it honestly felt like something straight out of a classic sci-fi universe. The show really delivered right from the start, continuing the exciting story of Legendary’s Monsterverse.
I’m really excited about Season 2 of Monarch! They’re diving deep into Kong’s backstory, showing us Skull Island before the big storm that wiped out the Iwi people – which is cool since we saw the aftermath in Godzilla vs. Kong. We know Kong’s going to have a showdown with Titan X eventually, but the first episode already gave us a glimpse of some strange creatures that seem connected to Titan X somehow – maybe they’re its babies or live with it. It’s setting up a really interesting story!
The Scarabs That Accompany Titan X Are Reminiscent Of Alien’s Facehuggers

When Cate Randa tries to save Lee Shaw from the dangerous Axis Mundi, she accidentally awakens the Titan X, creating a rift in reality. This opening releases a group of smaller creatures, called Scarabs, from the surrounding forest. Lee Shaw discovers a working Monarch pod that could allow him to travel through the rift, but one of the Scarabs sneaks inside, setting the stage for a battle reminiscent of classic sci-fi stories.
The Scarabs, with their tentacles and shells, strongly resemble the creepy Facehuggers from the Alien movies. Like the Facehuggers – which come after the alien egg stage – their main purpose is to find a host and implant a young alien inside them.
Facehuggers and Scarabs share a similar appearance, resembling spiders or sea creatures with lots of legs and waving appendages. The Scarab even mimics a Facehugger’s attack, lunging towards Lee’s face. However, unlike the Facehugger’s goal of implanting a parasite, the Scarab’s sharp teeth clearly indicate it intends to inflict serious harm.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ Minor Monsters Are A Huge Highlight
While the giant Titans like Godzilla and Kong always grab attention in movies and TV shows, one of the most enjoyable things about Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the introduction of many smaller, fascinating monsters. Even in the first episode of season two, we met several new creatures: the Scarabs, a terrifying, oversized rodent called a Vinerat, and the psychovulture, a frightening hunter originally from the Monsterverse comics.
Okay, let me tell you, Season 1 really nailed the monster design. Creatures like the Frost Vark, Endopede, and Brambleboar weren’t just window dressing; they actually delivered some of the most exciting moments. What I appreciated was that these monsters raised the tension and action in a really smart way. The show didn’t have to constantly bring out the big, world-ending Titans – the ones that are hard to believe could sneak around – to create real stakes. These smaller, but still dangerous, creatures were a fantastic way to keep things moving and keep me on the edge of my seat.
Smaller monsters play a key role in what makes Monarch: Legacy of Monsters unique. The show aims to deepen the history and mythology of the Monsterverse, and creatures like the Scarabs contribute to a more detailed and connected cinematic world. The first episode suggests we’ve only seen a small part of what promises to be a thrilling second season.
