Mon Mothma’s SHOCKING Breakdown: The Secret She’s Desperate to Hide

The opening of Season 2 had a similar vibe to the gritty prequel of Rogue One. It was a triple episode extravaganza packed with explosions, tension, menace, and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma struggling to keep her composure at her daughter’s wedding.

During this week’s rebellion events, other characters faced more hardships, but Mothma’s precarious position in Imperial high society pushed her to the brink of collapse on the dance floor. As reported from the scene, O’Reilly observed that Mon Mothma must “maintain a great deal behind a fragile veil of diplomacy.” This season offers a deep dive into the character of the future leader of The Rebel Alliance.

Mon Mothma debuted in the 1983 film “Star Wars: Episode 6 – Return of the Jedi”. Initially portrayed by Caroline Blakiston, she was later recast as O’Reilly in “Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith”. However, the actress reprised her role as Mothma once more in the 2016 film “Rogue One”, provided her voice in the series “Star Wars: Rebels”, and made a brief appearance in season 1 of “Ahsoka”.

In the series ‘Andor’, Mon Mothma has been covertly supporting the rebellion while maintaining an innocent facade within the Imperial Senate. Her role in the Rebellion has thus far been from afar, but it appears this may soon shift. Meanwhile, as Mothma seems to revel in the wedding festivities, O’Reilly begins to expose the intricate web of constraints that define Mothma’s existence.

In his appraisal, O’Reilly commended Tony Gilroy for crafting the dance sequence, stating, “It was quite an unexpected delight to find it in the script and later witness its realization… There was some uncertainty as to how we would conclude it, but we knew it had to delve into her mind. It was intriguing to explore the turmoil within a woman’s thoughts, and the ending served as a striking contrast to our previous perceptions of her character. She was on the brink of an outburst.

The Sequence Was Written as Vague

For O’Reilly, Mon Mothma isn’t just associated with one network, but she is fundamentally crucial to The Alliance, as he remarks, “If she ever relinquishes control at any point, if she lets go of the reins, she becomes ineffective to the Rebellion.” Moreover, the actress elaborated on how the series ‘Andor’ added layers to a character that O’Reilly found deep sorrow in Caroline Blakiston’s portrayal, which she now gets to delve into: “We’ve peeled back the layers of such a complex, intelligent, damaged, beautiful woman. Andor has breathed life, substance, muscle, emotion, and suffering into this woman in a way that I could have only dreamed of.” Essentially, O’Reilly finds the breadth that ‘Andor’ and Tony have given her to play as an extraordinary gift.

Andor Season 2 is streaming now on Disney+, with new episodes dropping in batches of three weekly.
