Sydney Sweeney is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and currently tops the list of most-searched actresses online. She consistently generates both media attention and public discussion.
While her attractiveness has often been a focus, many of the issues surrounding her growing fame actually involve politics and her political views.
Indeed the 28-year-old is something of a lightning rod in America’s culture wars.
In 2022, photos surfaced from her mother Lisa’s 60th birthday party showing guests wearing red ‘MAGA’ hats with the slogan ‘Make Sixty Great Again,’ leading to accusations that her family supported Donald Trump.
Some people were seen wearing ‘Blue Lives Matter’ shirts, seemingly as a dismissive reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Sydney responded to the backlash with a tweet, explaining that a simple celebration for her mother’s 60th birthday had been misinterpreted as a political statement, which she didn’t intend. She asked people to stop jumping to conclusions.
Note that she didn’t say that she and her family are not Republicans.

It was revealed last year that she had signed up to vote as a Republican in Florida in 2024, shortly after purchasing a vacation home there and a few months before Donald Trump won another term as president. She didn’t offer any explanation about this either.
Last year, American Eagle’s ‘great jeans’ ad sparked controversy, with some calling it racist. However, it unexpectedly received praise from President Trump, who called it ‘the hottest ad ever’.
Sydney attempted to end the discussion after describing the President’s support of the advertisement as bizarre.
The response to her actions online was overwhelmingly negative and harsh. People attacked her with cruel comments; one person even compared her to a Nazi icon, while another made a demeaning remark about her career and appearance.
American Eagle swiftly addressed concerns that their recent campaign was racist with a post on Instagram. They clarified that the campaign’s focus was, and always had been, the jeans themselves – specifically, celebrating how individuals express themselves through them. They emphasized that their jeans are meant to be worn with confidence and look good on all body types.
Of course, Sydney Sweeney is entitled to whatever political opinions she chooses, as is her family.
Despite all the confusion and unclear information, the Daily Mail has one thing they can explain right now, and they’re doing it first.
At least one of her family members has been a strong supporter of Donald Trump, particularly her brother Trent. He’s now a highly respected Air Force staff sergeant stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England.

In 2018, while attending Gonzaga University in his hometown of Spokane, Washington, Trent Sweeney was involved in a physical altercation during a march with a group of Trump supporters.
I was there with the group demonstrating when Vice President Pence came to town. It was quite a sight – a lot of us were showing our support, and many had masks, flags, and signs for President Trump. I felt it was important to be there and make our voices heard.
Supporters chanting ‘Trump’ confronted anti-Trump protestors near the ‘Baby Trump’ blimp.
That same day, 19-year-old Trent reported an assault to the police and provided them with a video he had taken of the incident.
According to the Daily Mail, Trent Sweeney had a short disagreement with a small woman protesting Trump, after she asked him to stop filming her.
Sweeney told police he was simply passing through, but video evidence shows he was actually with a group of pro-Trump supporters who intentionally gathered to express their political views.
The video begins with Trent Sweeney recording the group as they stand by the side of the road, with cars driving past and honking. Someone in one of the cars flipped them off, and a supporter of Donald Trump shouted back, ‘Where did you even go to school?’
When the pro-Trump group encountered the anti-Trump protestors, someone knocked a MAGA hat off one of their heads. Trent Sweeney immediately yelled, “Hey! Did you knock his hat off?” Someone from the other side responded, “Do you want me to knock yours off too?”
Sweeney claims someone assaulted him, saying “Hey hey hey hey,” after a small woman with a dog appeared to push his arm away while he was recording. She then told him to “Get the out of my face.”
There appears to be tussle, and then the footage ends.

According to a police report filed on October 2nd, 2018, Mr. Sweeney stated that a woman in her 40s attempted to grab his phone, and another person twisted his arm. The incident was classified as a simple assault by Officer Bieber-Brown.
The officer’s report states that Trent Sweeney explained he went to the protest surrounding Vice President Pence’s visit simply to experience American democracy firsthand.
The report states the officer told Trent that people in Spokane strongly dislike being filmed without their permission. Trent responded by saying he wasn’t intentionally recording the woman, he was simply walking past with his phone.
Police later confirmed no one was charged over the incident.
How you interpret what happened might depend on your political views, but it seems clear that Sydney’s brother was a strong supporter of Trump at the time.
The Sweeney siblings grew up in a religious family that loved spending time outdoors, near the Idaho-Washington border.
Father Steven worked in the medical field, and Lisa, his wife, had a successful career as a criminal lawyer. She eventually became Assistant Attorney General for Washington state, but she later chose to stay home and raise their children.
This family seemed to be strongly conservative. In 2017, Sydney’s grandmother, Sherry, shared a photo on Facebook of the entire family – including Sydney – standing with an American flag, and captioned it with a statement of her patriotic and religious beliefs: ‘I stand for the flag, I kneel for the cross’.

Other pictures, without Sydney, show the family with stars and stripes deck chairs on the lawn.
After ten years of appearing in small parts on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars, Sydney was beginning to gain recognition as an actress. In 2019, she received an Emmy nomination for her work on the popular high school drama, Euphoria, and also starred in the first season of the critically acclaimed series, White Lotus.
She’s often been criticized for trying to distance herself and her family from politics, and these efforts haven’t always been well-received.
Following the attention around an advertisement focusing on her jeans last year, Sydney Sweeney explained in an interview that she’s simply a fan of jeans and would prefer people focus on her work as an actress.
Dan Stevens, known for his role in Downton Abbey, recently pointed out that remaining neutral on white supremacy is effectively the same as supporting it. He shared this thought in a social media post, expressing his disappointment with those who choose not to condemn it.
Aimee Lou Wood, known for her role in The White Lotus, subtly expressed her disapproval of Sydney Sweeney by reacting to a post with a vomiting emoji.
Reports suggest Zendaya, her co-star on Euphoria, distanced herself from her during filming of the latest season due to concerns about her political views, which are perceived to be conservative.
Her public image has suffered because of her relationship with Scooter Braun, who is widely disliked by Taylor Swift’s fans – the very young audience she needs to gain viewers for her shows and movies.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce first connected at the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez in Venice last June. According to sources, they swapped contact information and began casually dating after they both returned to Los Angeles.
Things really started to feel significant around September. We spent Thanksgiving together, which was amazing, and then I got to spend the holidays with her family at her place in the Florida Keys – it was such a special time getting to know them!
However, Scooter Braun has faced public relations challenges as well. In 2019, he purchased Taylor Swift’s former record label for $300 million, which included the master recordings of her earlier songs – a move that sparked significant controversy.
Taylor Swift said she was shocked and upset by Braun’s actions, calling them relentless and controlling. She then took steps to regain ownership of her original recordings, purchasing them in May of last year for an estimated $360 million.
She rerecorded her older songs to prevent him from earning money from them.
His working relationship with Justin Bieber, who also has a large young fanbase, also fell apart. After managing Bieber for 15 years, they parted ways in 2023. Reports surfaced this year that Bieber agreed to pay him $31.5 million (approximately £24 million) for canceled performances and outstanding commissions.
As a result, many people online are reacting with strong disapproval to the news of their relationship.
When Tom Brady arrived at Sydney’s 28th birthday party, joining celebrities like Jeff Bezos, Ashton Kutcher, and Diplo, one journalist jokingly called it a gathering of ‘the worst people in the world’.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m often asked about navigating public perception, and it’s true that some criticism comes with the territory. While her film Christy didn’t perform well last year, Sydney Sweeney’s recent success with The Housemaid, starring Amanda Seyfried, proves she’s a force to be reckoned with – and they’re already planning a sequel! It just goes to show that one project doesn’t define a career, and talent ultimately shines through.
She’s beginning work on a new film called Scandalous, which tells the true story of the hidden relationship between Hollywood icons Kim Novak and Sammy Davis Jr. She will portray Kim Novak, and British actor David Johnsson will play Sammy Davis Jr.
This might address concerns that the American Eagle campaign has echoes of eugenics, and she’s definitely avoiding association with those who want to portray her as a supporter of Donald Trump.
Similar to how her brother directly confronted his opponents, is it possible this controversy will inevitably reach her, regardless of her actions?
