Filmmaker Jeff died by suicide inside the Los Angeles home he shared with his actress wife Aubrey.

Following his passing on Friday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that he took his own life by hanging at his Los Feliz residence.

In 2022, the residence that Baena had recently bought was where his body was found by one of his assistants. At approximately 10:25 am, authorities were called to the scene, as reported by DailyMail.com following a statement from the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The statement mentioned that the man, around 47 years old, was declared deceased without any transportation required.

In response to a call at the 2100 block of Fern Dale Place, a location where an investigation into a death was required, officers were dispatched. Upon arrival, they found a deceased male. This information was shared by the Los Angeles Police Department. It was later confirmed that the director of The Life After Beth had passed away at the scene.

The family of Baena has conveyed to Deadline their profound sadness over the recent developments, and they kindly request seclusion during this challenging period.

Six months prior to his unfortunate suicide, the duo were spotted having an enjoyable walk at Griffith Park in Los Angeles on July 5th, during the summer season.

As an avid park enthusiast myself, clad in my go-to hiking attire, I couldn’t help but notice this charming duo strolling around, clearly at ease with each other’s company. This beloved local spot, where nature and tranquility intertwine, was their playground for the day.

After completing his film studies at New York University, Baena made the move to Los Angeles to kick-start his career in the film industry.

In the early stages of his career, he held entry-level positions under prominent filmmakers such as Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell, eventually serving as a production assistant for Zemeckis and an assistant editor for Russell, helping him establish himself within the entertainment industry.

I’m absolutely thrilled to sing the praises of this filmmaker who truly captivated me with his exceptional directorial skills! It all started with his mesmerizing debut, “Life After Beth,” where Aubrey Plaza shone like a star. But it doesn’t end there; he also breathed life into “The Little Hours.” I can’t wait to see what other cinematic masterpieces this director has up his sleeve!

Additionally, Baena is credited with collaborating on the script for I Heart Huckabees, a movie that received a nomination for the 2004 Gotham Award in the Best Feature category.

Additionally, he penned “Life After Beth,” a movie that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. Similarly, his film “Joshy” had its premiere at this renowned event and even received a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize.

The Miami native also worked on Horse Girl and Spin Me Round.

For his TV projects, he not only served as director but also executive producer for the Showtime series “Cinema Toast.” Alongside his wife, he shared the role of director for this production.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve always been open about my struggles with mental health, and this was particularly true leading up to the premiere of my movie “Horse Girl” in 2020.

In a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, he was inquired about whether the movie’s main character, Sarah (portrayed by Alison Brie), leaving the mental institution was inspired by real-life events or drawn from personal experiences.

In a straightforward manner, Baena publicly acknowledged observing his stepmother’s struggle with bipolar disorder, expressing: ‘Regrettably, individuals are often discharged even when they continue to require care,’ he penned down in February 2020.

For individuals deemed not harmful to themselves, the 72-hour mandatory detention is not necessary. Thus, their release becomes imminent following this initial assessment duration.

‘The first woman who became my stepmother struggled with manic depression, leading her to be admitted and discharged frequently from mental health facilities in Miami, as a result of Florida’s Baker Act.’

As a dedicated follower, I wouldn’t classify “Horse Girl” as an activist film per se, but it certainly delves deeply into the way our society and individual selves interact with people suffering from mental illness. This exploration was a significant motivator behind its creation.

Together, Baena and Brie collaborated on a movie that delved into Brie’s familial lineage marked by mental illness, focusing particularly on Brie’s grandmother who struggled with Schizophrenia.

In her post on the forum, Brie explained that the primary motivation behind creating such a story was its initial conception.

The director, who is Aubrey Plaza’s husband, additionally shared that his personal family background with mental health issues contributed significantly to the storyline of the movie.

In 2020, I quietly tied the knot with the radiant star of The White Lotus, a decision we made nearly a decade after our initial encounter. We’ve carefully maintained our privacy, keeping our love story mostly hidden from the public eye.

Plaza has not publicly commented on the death of her husband.

The actress’s final Instagram post with her husband revealed how ‘proud’ she was of him.

Back in May 2021, I took to social media to honor my beloved spouse in one of my last posts with him. This exceptional man was showered with praise by none other than yours truly – an award-winning actress.

I’m incredibly proud of my wonderful husband, Jeff Baena, for coming up with another film idea that will transport us to Italy and undoubtedly create some more mischief,” she wrote in her post.

In their final poignant social media update, the beloved duo were captured sharing tender moments as they gazed deeply into each other’s eyes. The heartfelt post was accompanied by snapshots from a Deadline article, revealing their exciting new project – the 2022 movie titled Spin Me Round.

I am fortunate to be mourned by my cherished spouse, my dear mother Barbara Stern, loving stepfather Roger Stern, esteemed stepmother Michele Baena, devoted brother Brad Baena, and valued step-siblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.

Aubrey enjoyed a New York Knicks Game just two days before his tragic death.

On New Year’s Day, the actress could be found comfortably settled in the first row of Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden, eagerly watching the local team take on the Utah Jazz.

In a picture posted on the Knicks’ Instagram, you can see Plaza wearing jeans, a black corduroy jacket, and a hat with an orange bill atop her sleek, brown hair.

Kicking off the new year, we shared pictures with our valued court-side companions. Among them were celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann along with her daughter, Maude, and Keenan Michael Key.

It comes as Aubrey was scheduled to present at the 2025 Golden Globes ahead of the tragic death.
