Molly Shannon Reveals Surprising Secrets About Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz on SNL!

Molly Shannon reminisced about her years at Saturday Night Live, looking back as the program approached its 50th anniversary milestone.

When asked about the hosts who left a lasting impact on her, Molly, age 60, promptly brought up Jennifer Aniston, who is also 55 years old.

She said the Friends star was ‘very laid back’ while hosting SNL for the first time in 1999.  

‘I remember being like, “Ooh, that’s so cool. Jennifer Aniston,”‘ she recalled to People.

In my own words, let me share this: “I wore a sizeable wedding band and maintained an effortlessly professional demeanor. With years of experience in the TV industry under my belt, I’ve learned to navigate its complexities with grace.

During her first appearance on Saturday Night Live, Aniston was already engaged to Brad Pitt, sporting a custom-designed diamond and platinum ring he had painstakingly worked on for seven months.

Aniston has hosted Saturday Night Live twice – in 1999 and again in 2004. 

Molly also talked about Cameron Diaz, revealing she chowed down on salad during her hosting stint.

During the rehearsal, she was mostly munching on salads filled with plenty of leafy greens. And she commented, “I wish to emulate Cameron Diaz and simply consume salads.

‘You know what I mean? Isn’t that funny?’

Molly also revealed the inspiration behind her iconic character Mary Katherine Gallagher.

Shannon shared that her father wasn’t joking by any means; he suffered severe injuries from a car crash and needed to re-learn how to walk.

The character’s traits are modeled around his limp, a characteristic I inherited from my father. This line is me mimicking a conversation with him: “She claims she can’t, yet she manages to deceive others. She holds power over everyone, even if it means manipulating them all.

At the tender age of four, Molly and her family were involved in a tragic automobile collision that proved fatal for her mother, younger sibling, and cousin, while her father suffered severe injuries.

Molly’s father was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 

Molly and her older sister survived and were raised by their aunt.

As a youngster, I was utterly devastated, feeling a profound sorrow that threatened to shatter me, yet somehow I clung on, determined to keep it all inside. This is what I shared during my heart-to-heart with the LA Times.

She suggested that it’s hard to imagine someone not experiencing profound grief over the loss of their mother and sister, yet they may suppress these feelings initially. Later on in life, those repressed emotions might resurface.

Shannon broke out as a comedy star when she joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1995. 

That particular year saw her developing the cherished character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, a role she later brought to life on the big screen in the 1999 film titled “Superstar.

The character was a competitive, yet disliked girl attending a Catholic school, who had the habit of nervously sniffing her underarms.

Shannon frequently immersed herself recklessly into hard items such as metallic chairs, unprotected by cushioning, due to her indifference towards self-injury following the traumatic event.

She didn’t mind getting hurt or causing injury to herself. In other words, she didn’t value her own safety. She compared this attitude to punk rock, suggesting it was carefree and reckless. Because of the hardships she had faced, she seemed indifferent towards everything that happened to her.

Shannon continued, “You seem to have bared your soul, but I pray that my tale may benefit others.

Shannon mentioned that she developed the Mary Katherine Gallagher character during her time at NYU, explaining it was heavily influenced by her personal experiences, particularly her feelings of anxiety, clumsiness, eagerness to please, and a blend of mistakes and optimism following an accident.

‘I just exaggerated everything I felt as a little girl and turned it into a character,’ she added.
