Molly Meldrum’s representative has provided an update on his health following reports that he is very ill.
According to a recent report in Woman’s Day, the 83-year-old music industry veteran is still alive, though his business manager notes he isn’t as physically strong as he once was.
‘The reality is he’s had some issues,’ Mark Klemens told the publication.
‘And he’s getting older – he’s 83 now – and, physically, he’s not as strong as he used to be.’
He added that the person was content and enjoying life, still possessing a quick sense of humor and occasionally having a drink. Things were simply more peaceful now.
Molly is currently staying with his partner, Yan Wangngam, at his home in Melbourne, and he often sees close friends who come to visit.
People began to worry about Molly’s health in June 2024 when he wasn’t able to attend the funeral of his friend and Hey Hey It’s Saturday colleague, John Blackman.
More worries about Molly’s health arose in October of that year, sparked by the release of concerning photos of the Australian music icon.
Molly looked frail in the images shared by his boyfriend Yan on social media.
They looked very different compared to how lively he seemed at the Australian Open just ten months earlier.
I was looking at a recent photo, and it really struck me – it showed the iconic TV personality looking incredibly relaxed, almost asleep, on their couch at home in Melbourne. It was a candid moment, and a bit surprising to see him without his usual hat, mouth slightly open. It felt very personal and showed a side of him we don’t often see.
In a different photo, Meldrum is shown with a beard, relaxing on the porch and seemingly napping in the sunlight, his hand gently resting on his chest.
A friend mentioned that Molly was having health problems and had become very private around that time.
Everyone was surprised when Molly didn’t attend the celebration for the 50th anniversary of ABC’s Countdown, the show that made her famous.
Gavin Wood, the show’s announcer, shared that his close friend had been dealing with health issues since a near-fatal fall from a ladder in December 2011.
Wood told the Herald Sun that the incident, or ‘the fall’ as he called it, was a terrible experience.
Molly later released a media statement recognising the Countdown milestone.
According to Wood, the game show Countdown, which aired from November 8, 1974, to July 19, 1987, came about thanks to Meldrum’s passion and vision.
Since March 2023, when he publicly exposed himself and appeared to urinate on the floor at a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne, Meldrum has largely stayed out of the public eye.
The alarming incident came after a string of other bizarre antics by Meldrum in recent years.
In January 2023, Meldrum unexpectedly lowered his pants while attending his friend Sir Elton John’s final Yellow Brick Road concert at AAMI Park in Melbourne, causing a commotion.
Molly claimed a problem with his clothing caused the incident, but video quickly appeared online showing him doing a similar provocative dance for an audience at the 2022 ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Victoria.
