Recently, Australian music legend Molly Meldrum appeared drastically different in a new image, following the news that he has been facing health challenges.
81-year-old Meldrum sported a scruffy beard while giving a peace sign for a seldom-taken photograph captured in April this year.
He wore a large jacket and red cap as he smiled and posed while holding an album.
According to a reliable source, Meldrum has been facing significant health issues, causing him to mostly step back from public activities.
Next month signifies a milestone as it’s been fifty years since Countdown, the iconic Australian music program that launched Meldrum’s career, first graced television screens down under.
Meldrum, who’s made unfavorable news in recent times, missed an appearance at a Royal Australian Mint function held in Melbourne on Wednesday to introduce a special Countdown coin.
Previously known Countdown host, Gavin Wood, disclosed that his longtime friend has faced health issues since his high-profile fall from a ladder in December 2011, an incident that came close to taking his life.
According to Wood, he expressed to the Herald Sun that the event, which was unfortunately the fall, was truly terrible.
In January, he turns 82 years old. Throughout his entire life, he’s been a well-known figure, but now it seems like he’s content with leading a more tranquil existence.
‘Molly remains the same – her passion for music continues unabated, and her volume settings are just as high as before. She’s still mischievous, maintaining that spark that endears us to her, but I believe she’s relishing her everyday life as an ordinary individual.’
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I myself wasn’t present at the coin unveiling, but Meldrum made sure to share his thoughts through a statement. And let me tell you, when he endorses an artist on the show, you can bet your last dollar that his iconic catchphrase slips right in there!
Meldrum shared, “Those days leave me with cherished memories, and the show will always remain etched in my mind.
I’m delighted to learn that a commemorative coin is being minted, as our efforts have significantly impacted the Australian music industry.

Wood expressed that his ex-colleague Meldrum would undoubtedly be delighted to witness something as stunningly beautiful and creatively unique as the coins honoring the show for which he is well-known.
The announcer and periodic substitute host for Countdown, who worked on the show between November 8, 1974 and July 19, 1987, attributed its creation to Meldrum’s excitement and vision.
Meldrum deeply immersed himself in the program; it was not just a part of his life but essentially his existence, as stated by Wood.
Meldrum has remained out of the public limelight ever since his last controversy 18 months ago.
In March 2023, Meldrum drew attention for his inappropriate behavior during a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne, which included publicly exposing himself and apparently urinating on the floor.
A clip, sourced by Daily Mail Australia, captured a moment where he publicly displayed his private parts during the closing moments of the pop star’s performance at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.
He seemed to be relieving himself on the floor, all the while gazing up at the stage with his distinctive Stetson cowboy hat on.
The alarming incident came after a string of other bizarre antics by Meldrum in recent years.
In January 2023, Meldrum made headlines when he unexpectedly lowered his trousers during the Farewell Yellow Brick Road concert by his longtime friend, Sir Elton, at AAMI Park in Melbourne.
During his final act, the I’m Still Standing hitmaker brought Meldrum on stage for a rendition of The B**** Is Back.
At first, Meldrum claimed a wardrobe issue was to blame, but videos quickly emerged that showed him repeating his controversial backside gestures towards crowds during the 2022 ChillOut Festival held in Daylesford, Victoria.
