Molly Gordon wasn’t landing starring roles. So she co-wrote one for herself in ‘Oh, Hi!’

In a chic sunshine yellow minidress and sporting a forest green hat from the local NPR station KCRW, Gordon welcomes me with an adorably awkward encounter – should I remain seated for a handshake or rise to embrace? – reminiscent of any charming heroine from the ’90s romantic comedies.

Gordon explains, “I’ve been referring to it as a romantic comedy that takes a turn for the worse. I can’t think of another way to put it, because she believes they’re in a romantic comedy, but in reality, they’re not.

In that instant, I felt immensely thankful for her wisdom because my producer also agreed, saying, ‘No, this isn’t what you desire. Let’s keep it as originally planned.’

In the past, Viswanathan remembered a moment when she and Gordon were both vying for the same role. They collaborated on self-taped auditions. Unfortunately, neither of them landed the part. However, Gordon’s guidance and suggestions were clear and compelling, which doesn’t come as a shock to Viswanathan now, seeing her progress towards developing and overseeing her own projects.

Viswanathan stated, “The situation for characters like Iris from ‘Oh, Hi!’ is quite delicate. However, Molly is so endearing that it’s enchanting. Her challenge was to strike the right balance: how eccentric, how relatable, how funny, how intense. It’s a tricky mix. Watching her manage all these aspects while working tirelessly is truly remarkable.

In the year 2026, actor Gordon will share the screen with Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson in an exciting blend of live-action and animation titled “Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie.” Notably, all three actors play human characters. Furthermore, Gordon is jointly penning the script for a modern adaptation of the ’80s comedy “Outrageous Fortune,” a tale about two struggling actresses, to be produced by Searchlight Pictures. She aspires to direct this project herself.

Gordon shares that his upcoming project is quite substantial, drawing an analogy with ‘The Nice Guys,’ the action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe,” he continues, “This means I’ll need to win people over and put on a show. But I’m all set and prepared for the challenge.

Prior to this, she is set to both direct and appear in the upcoming high school reunion comedy “Peaked,” a production she also co-authored, under A24.

In the movie, there’s a sense of reflection that resonates with me, as it seems to delve into the phase I’m currently experiencing – a stage where the question arises: Where do we belong? I’m no longer young and inexperienced, but neither am I a parent. It’s this vague, confusing period of life that leaves one wondering: Where does she fit in? This is why I began creating my own work.

Has she answered that question for herself yet?

Gordon muses, ‘Where is my place? It seems like a recurring question for me.’ He’s fortunate to have friends who share his perspective on life, reflecting this question back at him. However, he believes he may continue pondering about where he belongs until the end of his days.

After wrapping up the interview, Gordon skillfully managed the seating arrangement by directing, producing, and acting in a mini production right there, ensuring a smooth flow for everyone involved. And that’s one problem tackled!
