Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet gets candid about scrapped Cam & Mitch spinoff: 'It felt a little hurtful'

As a devoted fan of Modern Family, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Eric Stonestreet. The man who brought Cameron Tucker to vibrant life felt the sting of disappointment when his spinoff was nixed by the network. It’s like hearing that your favorite local diner closed down without even giving you a heads-up, leaving you with nothing but memories of the perfect pancakes and warm banter.

Eric Stonestreet admits he felt hurt when his Modern Family spinoff was scrapped by the network.

Actor from Modern Family, aged 53, who recently criticized phony individuals within Hollywood, confessed during an interview on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast on Sunday that he and his screen partner, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, originally intended to star in their own show.

Chris Lloyd, along with some other writers, penned an outstanding script taking Jesse and me on a journey through our lives in Missouri. However, when they were asked about it, they responded negatively.

‘They just said, “We don’t want to do it,”‘ he added.

Additionally, the Emmy award recipient disclosed his belief that the network discarded the project due to perceiving himself and Ferguson as being considered “older individuals.

The person from Kansas expressed: ‘Perhaps Jesse and I were seen as the older folks, or something similar, who weren’t considered deserving enough to continue developing those characters.’

And although he felt let down, he understood the decision was not in his hands.

It felt a little hurtful. But people make business decisions,’ Stonestreet said.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d say, “Indeed, the actor confessed that the success of the hypothetical show would have been a certain hit among viewers, if it had ever seen the light of day.

He shared: ‘I don’t think it would have not been successful. Because you had one of the creators — who had really taken such great care of making sure that show was great for so long — willing to do it.’

Additionally, Stonestreet hinted at the prospect of a Modern Family reunion and openly shared that discussions about it have taken place.

‘I wish we’d do a Christmas special, and there’s been talk of that,’ he said.

Modern Family first aired on ABC on September 23, 2009, and concluded on April 8, 2020. This show generated a lot of buzz initially and maintained strong viewership throughout its run.

It aired for eleven seasons and yielded an impressive 250 episodes.

In addition to the lead actor, Ed O’Neill, the series featured Rico Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson as part of the main ensemble.

The Modern Family cast recently reunited at the 30th annual SAG Awards in February.
