Modern Family star was told he’s “not funny” after audition
Actor Ty Burrell, known for his role in Modern Family, recently revealed the critical comments he received during his audition process for the popular series.
For eleven seasons, the actor brought Phil Dunphy to life in the well-liked television series, a parting that’s tough to envision with another face filling those shoes. Yet, it’s fascinating to contemplate how the endearing persona might have appeared differently.
On Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Burrell confessed that his initial audition for the show executives didn’t turn out as expected. He shared with his ex-co-star from “Modern Family,” “I really bombed the first trial.

I confessed that I was feeling rather “rigid” during our meeting, and the high-ranking execs in the room didn’t hesitate to deliver some blunt feedback about my presentation skills.
‘He wasn’t considered humorous,'” Burrell was told, humorously commenting: “Yet, there are still those who share this viewpoint.
Initially, the show didn’t get off to a great start, but the co-creators, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, were certain that Ty Burrell was ideal for the part because they had originally conceptualized Phil with him in mind.
After attempting another round of auditions and undergoing a screen test, the actor subsequently auditioned together with the character who was intended to be his television daughter.
In simpler terms, “Burrell revealed that we visited Steve Levitan’s garden where Sarah Hyland was present (as Haley Dunphy). We had the opportunity to improvise and perform a scene similar to a single-camera audition. It turned out well because that take was chosen.
Ferguson responded, “It’s incredible all the hurdles you had to overcome. I find it incredibly intriguing.
Later, Burrell inquired from his on-screen brother-in-law if there was ever an instance where he needed to contest for a part. “Not once,” Ferguson replied, promptly interjecting. Following a chuckle, he amended: “I’m positive I have.
Hey there! I, being that lovable, larger-than-life character from a popular show, Phil Dunphy, managed to win over audiences with my optimistic attitude and zany persona, turning me into an endearing TV dad. Later on, my side-splitting acting chops got me two Emmy trophies and six nominations, making it clear that the world loves a good laugh!
