Modern Family star reveals surprising secret about one of the show’s long-running gags
In a recent disclosure, Jesse Tyler Ferguson from “Modern Family” shared the reason behind Cam’s melancholic appearance in the well-known painting hanging over Lily’s bed on the show.
The sitcom presented numerous uncomfortable family scenarios, yet a painting featuring replicas of Ferguson and his co-star Eric Stonestreet as Mitchell and Cam stood out exceptionally. This was especially true when the characters decided to place semi-nude angel figures that looked like them in their daughter Lily’s room.
For a while, Lily’s room displayed a painting that she eventually admitted she disliked intensely.

More recently, Ferguson explained the reason behind Stonestreet’s Cam appearing sad in the portrait. Interestingly, the image utilized for the painting was taken during a period when he believed he might lose his job.
Back when we did our initial run-through for the show on the network, I shared this during a casual conversation with my buddy Ty Burrell on my “Dinner’s on Me” podcast.
Eric shared that there were jokes he didn’t find funny and they didn’t go well. He thought he was about to lose his job due to this performance.
Immediately following our table reading session, they asked Eric and me to step out into the hallway for a photograph. They wanted this picture as a model to create the mural that Mitch and Cam were about to paint on Lily’s bed.
“And basically, they were gonna impose our faces onto this mural.”
Thankfully, Stonestreet’s apprehensions never came true, and his worried gaze was captured on the show for numerous seasons to come.
According to Ferguson, Eric snapped these photos in a state of distress. His gaze clearly showed, “What are you photographing? I’m going to get fired regardless.” Fortunately, as it turned out, he didn’t lose his job.
In Season 8, it was Lily who expressed her disapproval towards the unusual piece of artwork that remained hanging on the wall.
Ferguson mentioned that he wasn’t sure for how long the mural was displayed during the exhibition, as at some point they decided to paint over it.
However, his gaze suggests a performer who believes he’s about to lose his role. Yet, these eyes belong to Cam, portraying an ethereal angel high above.
“The eyes of Mitchell are just steely confidence,” he then added. “I nailed it.”
