MobLand Season 1, Episode 4: More Questions Than Answers

Head’s Up: The fourth episode of MobLand Season 1, titled “Rat Trap”, may disappoint some viewers who were eagerly anticipating the series after its premiere on Paramount+. Instead of providing answers to lingering questions, this episode seems to raise even more mysteries. Characters’ actions and connections become increasingly strange and unexplained as opposed to contributing to a larger narrative.

Once more, there’s enough intrigue to keep you engaged, yet the number of engaging details is gradually dwindling throughout the season. If this trend continues, there might not be much left to grip onto by episode 6. With no central mystery, I remain vague about where the story in MobLand is headed. The narrative had a direction initially, but it tidily resolves that after just two episodes. This development, however, introduces another predicament for the Harrigans, though one with less compelling consequences.

The Only Enjoyable Pieces Of MobLand Come From Some Unexpected Revelations

Conrad Used To Sleep With Bella, And Everyone Knows It

In the movie “Rat Trap”, numerous characters engage in conversations with each other. They frequently travel to different locations for discussions, only to move on to talk to another person at a new destination. Occasionally, they converse while wearing headphones during these car rides. Given the abundance of dialogue, one might expect significant revelations or insights. However, these moments are infrequent. We’re frequently informed that crucial information has been shared, much like we’re warned about the villainous nature of Conrad (played by Pierce Brosnan). Yet, such revelations or evidence of his malice remain elusive throughout the film.

Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and Bella (Lara Pulver) had a past relationship, which Kevin (Paddy Considine) is fine with. Maeve (Helen Mirren) is upset about it, while Harry (Tom Hardy) has to hide his feelings. I myself don’t have any opinions on the matter. Since Bella and Conrad haven’t shared any screen time yet, it leaves us puzzled about this peculiar group dynamics. This revelation came as a surprise, though not a pleasant one.

Additionally, a significant detail emerged: the identity of the harsh prison guard Harry encountered at the youth center, who you might remember as the older man Harry once spotted at the nursing home. Strangely enough, this character was quickly forgotten in the storyline. Despite this, Harry hasn’t let him slip his mind, and he inquires if Kevin remembers the warden with a cruel demeanor. Kevin claims to have no recollection, but his expression suggests there may be more to the story.

It doesn’t take much time before a disturbing flashback sheds light on a shocking truth: Kevin not only knows the guard, but has been horrifically sexually abused by him. If this revelation is meant to provide insight into Kevin, then MobLand is in far more disarray than I initially thought. If the intention is for the prison guard to play a significant role in this complex narrative, I must remind you that he was previously seen in a nursing home, struggling to even take care of himself.

In my previous statement, I pointed out that the main thread of the story is now resolved. It appears that Richie (Geoff Bell) has been tricked by Harry. However, they still have challenges ahead. From what I understand, Richie wants the Harrigans to attend Tommy’s funeral. The musical cue hints that things are about to get complicated. To be honest, I find that as believable as thinking Conrad would make Henry VIII blush, as Kevin puts it; he just can’t seem to keep Harry’s wife from speaking up.

The fourth episode of “MobLand” is titled “Rat Trap,” as there’s a developing problem concerning an informant within the Harrigan gang. Yet, it’s such a minor issue that I almost overlooked mentioning it. Since I can’t tell who’s loyal to whom, if someone is a traitor, I’m unsure what that implies. It could be interesting to speculate about this, or maybe the whole plotline will be resolved in the next episode. That’s just how “MobLand” goes.
