As someone who has been following Disney movies for decades, I can confidently say that I was never wrong about the power of their films. Despite some initial skepticism from critics, Moana 2 is proving to be yet another box office juggernaut. With record-breaking earnings on Thanksgiving Day and set to surpass even Frozen 2, it’s clear that Disney has once again struck a chord with audiences worldwide.
Disneymade a debut with mixed critic reviews, yet, as expected, the final outcome proved otherwise. The long-awaited follow-up to the 2016 box-office smashing animation has been breaking box office sales records instead.
According to Variety, the release of Moana 2 set a new record on Thanksgiving Day, raking in $28 million, surpassing Frozen 2’s previous holiday revenue of $14.9 million. In a close second was Universal’s Wicked, which made an impressive $16.9 million, marking the second-highest Thanksgiving Day earnings for any film.
The sequel to Moana, titled “Moana 2,” has raked in $85.5 million within the U.S. so far. Predictions suggest it could earn at least $175 million during the five-day holiday period, potentially breaking box office records. If successful, it would surpass the earnings of both “Frozen 2” ($125 million in 2019) and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” ($109M in 2013).
The movie has also been sailing into overseas markets where it currently has an international box office total of $24.1 million through two days in 39 markets. Added to the domestic total, the global running cume is now $109.6M.
Disney is back to its former dominance during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the box office.
Three years on from our initial adventure, I find myself embarking once more on an exciting journey with none other than the legendary demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), alongside the courageous Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) in the heart of Moana 2!
Following an unanticipated phone call from her navigational forebears, Moana embarks on a voyage across the vast oceans of Polynesia towards treacherous, ancient waters teeming with peril for an adventure unlike any she’s previously encountered.
The financial triumph of Moana 2 is providing Disney with a pleasant melody, particularly after the average appraisals that surfaced recently. With 142 critic reviews tallied, the film has maintained an approximately 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have commended the film’s “breathtaking animation” and “vibrant journey,” but they concede that the narrative lacks the same level of inspiration or originality as the initial film.
As a gamer, I’d say even us game enthusiasts might differ in our opinions, but it seems like Moana 2 is highly-rated among average moviegoers, scoring an impressive 87% on the Popcornmeter.
