Moana 2 sails to the top of the box office in record breaking $221M weekend surpassing Wicked and Gladiator II
As a seasoned movie enthusiast with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that this week’s box office has been quite a spectacle! The grand entrance of “Wicked” has undoubtedly stolen the show, reminding us all that there’s no place like the silver screen.
During the extended Thanksgiving weekend, Moana 2 claimed the number one spot at the box office, following the pattern established on its initial release day and also on Black Friday.
The eagerly awaited animated adventure featuring Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson surpassed previous records this Easter weekend 2023, earning a staggering $221 million in the U.S. within five days. This figure surpasses the previous five-day record set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie over Easter 2023 and the Thanksgiving record established by Frozen 2 in 2019, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
Globally, the musical centered around a girl selected by the sea to lift a spell over her native island, added an additional $165.3 million to its earnings, bringing the grand total to $386.3 million. It debuted at the top spot everywhere, with the exception of China.
According to Disney Entertainment’s co-chairman, Alan Bergman, who spoke in a statement on Sunday, Moana 2 not only met but significantly exceeded our initial high expectations this weekend, demonstrating the remarkable impact and enduring popularity that the original Moana has achieved.
He remarked that it’s truly advantageous for us to have a remarkably gifted and diligent creative crew at Disney Animation, who together with our exceptional actors Auli’i and Dwayne, and fantastic fresh music, breathed life into this exciting journey.
I’m thrilled to express my gratitude on this joyous occasion! It’s thanks to the incredible support of cinephiles like you that we’ve achieved an unprecedented opening. Here’s to the start of a remarkable cinematic journey together!
In the end, “Wicked: Part 1” slipped down to the runner-up position, but the two hours and forty minutes of the musical adaptation from the award-winning Broadway show kept audiences flocking to the theaters.
Additionally, it set new milestones by being crowned as the highest-grossing adaptation of a Broadway musical ever made, surpassing the earnings of the 1978 version of Grease.
Over a typical three-day period, the spectacular stage production featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as rivals Glinda and Elphaba made $80 million. However, when you add Wednesday and Thursday to that, it brought in an impressive total of $117.5 million for the extended weekend.
The movie is performing well around the world, with a global total of nearly $359.3 million.
In a second installment of Gladiator, featuring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, they engaged in intense competition, ultimately securing a third-place finish during the five-day run, bringing in approximately $44 million at the box office.
The expensive movie, initially priced at around $350 million for both production and promotion, has now made enough money to cover these costs. So far, it has earned a domestic total of about $111.2 million and a global total of approximately $320 million.
In fourth position is the film “Red One,” where Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans team up for an adventure aimed at rescuing a kidnapped Santa Claus, portrayed by JK Simmons.
Over the extended weekend, which included three days and two additional days, the holiday adventure grossed approximately $18.3 million in ticket sales.
In the movie version of the beloved children’s book, titled “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” starring Judy Greer, managed to earn an impressive $4.88 million during its initial five-day run.
In the continuation of Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin, released by Angel Studios, managed to maintain its popularity among cinema-goers, earning a spot at number six.
Over the extended weekend, a historically grounded tale about a pastor in Nazi Germany participating in a plan to kill Adolf Hitler raised a grand total of $3.47 million.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the thrill as Venom: The Last Dance keeps spinning its magic. It seems the world just can’t get enough, as the third installment in the franchise continues to draw audiences, adding another impressive $3.1 million to its earnings, making a grand total of $461.15 million globally.
In an eighth-place finish with earnings of $956,797, the film titled “Heretic,” featuring a chilling performance by Hugh Grant as a man who challenges two Mormon missionaries to question their beliefs while they fight for survival, managed to make it through.
The Wild Robot continued to charm audiences, this week in ninth place.
The story of a robot stranded on a deserted island earned $670,000 over the three-day period.
Completing the list of the top 10 films is “A Real Pain,” featuring Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg, who portray two cousins embarking on a journey through Poland in tribute to their grandmother. This dramedy grossed $665,000.
