Moana 2 lands lower Rotten Tomatoes rating than Moana
Ah, dear fellow film enthusiasts! After feasting my eyes upon the latest Rotten Tomatoes rating for Moana 2, I must admit, it left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. As a connoisseur of animated films and an ardent admirer of the original Moana, I’ve grown accustomed to nothing less than cinematic masterpieces.
Moana 2‘s debut Rotten Tomatoes rating is lower than the first movie.
The upcoming sequel, available in U.S. theaters now and hitting UK screens on November 29th, continues the story of our heroine who ventures into treacherous, ancient waters with a motley crew, prompted by a surprising message from her navigational forebears.
The film brings back Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and Maui, respectively.
Initial responses indicate that the movie garnered a 69% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is noticeably lower compared to the 95% score received by the original 2016 Disney film.
The rating may increase with additional reviews, yet it appears that many critics concur that the sequel falls short compared to the original’s impact, even though its animation is visually stunning.
Here’s what some of the reviews have been saying so far:
Variety
The sequel to “Moana” is generally well-received, offering a fun, thrilling ride for children, but in some ways, it feels like a manufactured product compared to the original “Moana,” which at its finest, managed to rise above such labeling.
Time Out
Moana continues to be an exceptional character, demonstrating both independence and resourcefulness, yet still capable of stumbling, and her interaction with Maui remains delightful, although it’s more tender this time around compared to the witty banter seen in the initial movie.
Rolling Stone
From what I gather, it appears to follow a pattern similar to ‘Sequel 101’: If you enjoyed the initial film, here’s another one that’s quite similar. This could be seen as positive if that’s your preference. However, if you’re hoping for something different, it runs for approximately one hour and forty minutes.
The Hollywood Reporter
In contrast to the first Moana film which primarily explored the bond between Moana and her unwilling divine sidekick, the sequel, Moana 2, broadens its narrative scope by introducing additional characters. However, these new characters seem more like decoration in a story that appears rushed due to time constraints.
London Evening Standard
This animation is breathtakingly detailed, capturing each individual grain of sand and every droplet of sea mist. Its artistic quality raises the question whether a live-action replica is truly necessary.
IGN Movies
Although certain parts may still elicit laughter, the universe presented to us eight years ago seems neither more enriched nor more captivating.
Moana 2 is out now in US cinemas and will be released in UK cinemas on November 29, while Moana is available to stream on Disney+.
