Moana 2 has reached a major milestone at the box office following its record-breaking opening.
In 2024, the recently-released animated sequel is now among the trio of films that have surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
A mere 56 movies have managed to gross over a billion dollars worldwide, with an impressive 32 of them being produced by The Walt Disney Company. Notably, all three films expected to join the billion-dollar club in 2024 – “Deadpool & Wolverine”, “Inside Out 2”, and “Moana 2” – are part of this exclusive group.

By the end of December, the collective success of all Disney movies enabled the studio to surpass $5 billion at the global box office for the entire year.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the fact that this is the first time since pre-pandemic 2019 that a studio has raked in such impressive box office earnings. Isn’t it fantastic?
In contrast to the substantial earnings generated by Moana 2, its critical response was divided. When compared to the astounding 95% rating the original film received on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel falls short with a moderate 61%, which translates to an initial critics’ score of 69%.
Regarding the original “Moana” film, it has been announced that they are planning a real-life adaptation. Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia have been cast, with Laga’aia taking on the role of Moana for her first appearance in movies.
Filming for the upcoming movie started a month ago in beautiful Hawaii, with plans to debut it in 2026. It wasn’t long before photos from the filming location surfaced on the internet.
Johnson, once again stepping into the character of Maui with the help of a bodysuit, commented: “It took quite some time to get into this outfit.
I’m really glad you noticed I’ve gained muscle, as it suggests you couldn’t recognize the change before. It takes several hours each day for me to work on and achieve this transformation.
