Moana 2 has already set a new record with massive box-office opening

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast and someone who grew up with Moana as my spirit animal, I must say, I was absolutely thrilled to hear about the record-breaking success of Moana 2! The movie has already surpassed expectations and is now the biggest holiday opening of all time. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of Disney classics and the magical storytelling that captivates audiences of all ages.

The sequel to Disney’s “Moana,” namely “Moana 2,” shattered every record at the box office during Thanksgiving, securing the title of the largest holiday opening ever.

In its premiere on Wednesday, the sequel made approximately $45 million (£34 million), with an additional $11 million (£8.6 million) from previews. Furthermore, it’s anticipated that the film will generate around $138 million (£107 million) in total for its five-day opening period, which includes Thursday through Monday (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).

It’s predicted that the upcoming movie “Moana 2” will surpass both “Frozen” and its sequel “Frozen II” in terms of profit made during its first five days, with earnings expected to exceed $94 million (around £74 million) for “Frozen” and $125 million (approximately £98 million) for “Frozen II”.

The film featuring Auli’i Cravalho has set a record for the largest debut among all Disney animated films, also ranking as the third-largest opening for any animated movie. This title is surpassed only by the openings of Incredibles 2 and an unnamed future release of Inside Out (figures not adjusted for inflation).

In a remarkable turn of events, the animated film “Moana 2” is performing exceptionally well, even surpassing many live-action movies. Currently, it ranks as the third highest opening film of 2024, trailing only behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2”.

In their second outing, Moana was again given voice by Cravalho; though the film drew a considerable audience, it did not entirely win over the critical community.

At present, the sequel is receiving a 66% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is considerably lower and less enthusiastic than the 95% “Fresh” certification that its 2016 original film received.

The rating may rise higher or drop even lower as more critiques roll in. However, it appears that film critics are nearly universally underwhelmed by the sequel, despite its breathtaking animation.

Moana 2 is out now in US cinemas and will be released in UK cinemas on November 29, while Moana is available to stream on Disney+.
