mo.co team explains the reasons behind the global and local leaderboards removal

Story Highlights

  • mo.co removes global and local leaderboards in favor of friend and group-based rankings.
  • Developers say the old leaderboard system created XP imbalances across chapters.

Supercell’s action RPG titled “mo.co” is preparing to release its Chapter 2 ‘Portal Problems’ update. One of the notable changes in this update involves the removal of global and local leaderboards and their replacement with leaderboards based on friends and groups. The developers of mo.co have now shared insights as to why this shift was made.

Sustainability given the reason for removal, future mo.co leaderboards will focus on skill

In their June blog post, the team at mo.co explained why they decided to eliminate both the global and local leaderboards, a move that sparked varied responses among users. The developers mentioned that their primary motivation for discontinuing the system was to ensure long-term viability.

In the structure of XP progression and project completions, those who postponed wrapping up earlier content accidentally gained an edge in subsequent chapters. For instance, a player starting Chapter 2 without finishing Chapter 1’s projects would have a larger pool of XP to accumulate.

In simpler terms, it seems that starting over from scratch for each chapter may appear as a reasonable solution, but the team feels it could lead to more problems than solutions, since constantly restarting work at the beginning of every new chapter would not provide a good user experience. However, this action is not meant to be permanent and a replacement or alternative approach will be considered in due time.

Developers have indicated that upcoming leaderboard systems might emphasize assessing skill or more evenly distributed metrics instead of linking them directly to XP advancement. Although the existing system has its supporters, the creators aim to make sure that leaderboards in future releases are both equitable and beneficial.

Previously noted, the leaderboards within mo.co will transition from their current global and local formats, moving towards friend and group-focused leaderboards instead. These new options are said to be just as impressive by the developers.
