MMA Twitter reacts to Demetrious Johnson’s retirement announcement
As a seasoned MMA enthusiast with decades of watching fights under my belt, I must admit that Demetrious Johnson’s retirement feels like the twilight of an era. His announcement as the first-ever ONE Championship Hall of Fame inductee is a testament to his unparalleled skills and impact on the sport.
Last Friday, September 6th, during the ONE Championship live show, Demetrious Johnson, a previous UFC titleholder, declared his departure from mixed martial arts (MMA). Additionally, he was recognized as the inaugural member to be inducted into the ONE Championship Hall of Fame.
The news wasn’t entirely unexpected since he hadn’t competed in MMA for a while and had already signaled his intention to focus on other areas. However, it’s still a significant moment in the annals of MMA.
As I mentioned during my previous visit to Denver, Colorado, I hinted that this might be my final fight, and I was sincere. I’ve decided to hang up my gloves in mixed martial arts. I want to express my deep gratitude for the chance you’ve given me.

Among all the fighters I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing, none could match the sheer skill and artistry exhibited by the phenomenal Demetrious Johnson. It is high time he takes his rightful place in the UFC Hall of Fame, ideally no later than July 2025. An absolute legend indeed.

The GOAT talk is tiresome, but Demetrious Johnson is the most talented pure mixed martial artist we’ve seen IMO. We did a podcast before but I finally met him in person. 🥋
