As a longtime fan of MasterChef Australia, I must admit my initial enthusiasm for My Kitchen Rules (MKR) was somewhat dampened upon its return to our screens this year. Having grown accustomed to the unscripted, heartwarming tales of culinary camaraderie and friendly competition that defined MasterChef’s success, the scripted drama of MKR feels a tad out of place for me.


Viewers of My Kitchen Rules expressed their anger and worry on social media platforms, criticizing the manner in which Danny and Sonia presented their steak during their cooking competition on Monday night.

In this installment, the sibling team welcomed guests to their eatery, The Broasis, with a mission to highlight regional ingredients.

Even though they maintained a relaxed, pub-like ambiance, their endeavors ultimately stumbled, resulting in them being placed last on the leaderboard with a total score of 56 from a possible 110 points.

Danny, who is a butcher by trade, disregarded judge Colin Fassnidge’s advice on how to sear his steak. 

The evening’s main course, a Filet Mignon with Garlic Prawn Toppers, alongside Beer Battered Wedges and Bacon Broccoli Salad earned scathing reviews from the judges, fellow contestants, and viewers.  

Instead of pre-searing it, Danny placed the high-quality steak straight into the oven, which led to an undesirable texture.

Manu Feildel was especially critical, describing the steak as a ‘wet piece of cardboard’. 

Colin echoed this, stating, ‘You tried to give us too much and it backfired.’

Filet Mignon is renowned for its exceptional tenderness and subtle flavor, which earns it high regard among connoisseurs of fine steaks.

Danny was visibly disappointed in his efforts and said he felt like he’d let his sister down. 

Sonia sought to comfort him by saying, “He didn’t have to join me (on MasterChef), but he did, and that will always be significant.

Judges and fellow contestants were taken aback by the mishap from the lovable team.

‘I feel for Danny and Sonia but they should’ve taken Colin’s advice,’ one fan wrote on X.

‘Ruined the food,’ another fan chimed in on Instagram. 

‘Couldn’t even cook a steak and arrogantly ignored the chef’s advice. Nah. Cya,’ said another. 

A viewer of Masterchef Australia expressed concern as an individual was planning to cook fillet mignon directly in the oven without first browning it. They couldn’t believe it, stating it would likely turn out disastrous. Another spectator agreed, echoing similar sentiments.

A supportive fan commented, “Danny and Sonia pour all their passion into their dishes – they were disappointed this time, but we’ll have to wait and find out how things go for the next two evenings.

“That steak tasted like an old boot to me, it was too rare and you were being thick-headed about it, even though Danny, Colin, and your sister warned you.

Here’s what transpires when you disregard a judge’s guidance and opt for your personal culinary approach instead… Ah, Danny and Sonia. You both offer warm welcomes, but that’s precisely the reason you find yourselves at the lower end of the competition.

Many who enjoy steaks found it puzzling that Danny, being a butcher, seemed unaware of how to prepare a filet mignon, regardless of any tips he may have received.

‘You idiot Danny – Jesus you are a butcher mate. Even I know to sear them off first. Expensive meat too – you plonker,’ one critical viewer slammed. 

“I really appreciate these people, yet I find it hard to believe they don’t know how to prepare a proper Fillet Mignon, especially considering they overlooked Colin’s guidance.” In this version, the sentence has been rephrased in a more natural and easy-to-read manner while still conveying the same meaning.

Since he’s a butcher, one might assume he knows how to prepare a delicious steak, commented another viewer. “I enjoy both of these dishes and I’m looking forward to the dessert tasting as scrumptious as it appears.

Simultaneously, the beloved pair’s presentation of Townsville Mud Crab paired with Mango Chilli Dip garnered appreciation from the critics for embodying the “Australia in a dish” concept.

As a die-hard admirer, I can tell you that the innovative angle-grinder technique Danny used to open those crab shells on the show was met with applause due to the succulent, mouthwatering meat it revealed. However, this method has ignited a storm of criticism from animal rights advocates online.

Colin, though, said the mango chilli sauce took away from the natural flavours of the meat. 

The Espresso Martini Trifle that they prepared for the final course didn’t meet expectations because it didn’t solidify properly. This poor performance kept Danny and Sonia near the bottom of the rankings, making them vulnerable to elimination.

After the initial episodes of the 2024 home cooking show faced criticism from some viewers, who felt that the content appeared overly scripted.

I find it tiresome when contestants seem insincere in their conversations with the camera, as it’s probably filmed at a later time. It just feels unnecessary.

“Did I enroll in the incorrect program? What I’m watching appears to be the dramatic side of ‘Married at First Sight,’ disguised as a cooking show.” Another viewer expressed similar thoughts.

One more wrote: ‘I was really hoping the reboot of this show would not include having good guys and bad guys. It’s so scripted and fake. Take a lesson from MasterChef and just cook’. 

Another posted: ‘All of a sudden they’re talking about the crust of steak. Scripted bulls***t’ with one more adding, ‘This is so boring, I just can’t’.

MKR has had some teething issues since its return to television screens in recent years. 

Come September 2023, the 13th season debut of the cooking contest garnered only 470,000 viewers in the main cities.

Last night, MKR failed to make it into the top ten most-viewed shows, a significant drop compared to its peak rating years ago, where it consistently attracted more than a million viewers per episode.

MKR returned to Channel Seven in 2022, two years after it was axed.

Debuting to just 500,000 viewers, the show has continued to shed fans in the metro centres.

Channel Seven axed My Kitchen Rules: The Rivals from Sunday night’s programming back in 2020. 

2020 saw a significant dip in the TV show’s viewership figures, reaching an all-time low. This decline was considered unsustainable by Seven’s executive team, who were actively advocating for its cancellation that year.

According to a source, the magazine was informed that ‘MKR may no longer be secure. Certain influential figures are working towards permanently canceling the series.’

However, it returned in 2022, but has continued to struggle in the ratings.
