Mizkif under fire over Sakura Stunt in Japan after Kaho Shibuya reacts

Following renewed interest in a viral sakura tree prank in Japan, streamer Mizkif encounters criticism after receiving comments from Japanese content creator Kaho Shibuya about the incident.

In a recent controversy, content creators Mizkif and Kole (from Tokyo Sims) found themselves in the spotlight following an incident involving Japanese model Kaho Shibuya. The attention was drawn towards their prank of hanging from a cherry blossom tree, which has since become known as their “pull-up stunt.

Despite being removed by their original publishers, duplicates of these videos are now circulating on social media platforms. These clips mark another instance in an expanding pattern where overseas influencers face criticism for performing actions perceived as disrespectful to Japanese culture.

In a short timeframe of under 24 hours, comments made by Kaho Shibuya, a popular Japanese content creator and streamer, exploded on social media, garnering over 2 million views. For those who may not recognize the name, Shibuya is also recognized for her work in modeling, cosplay, and adult videos, where she has built a significant fanbase.

Kaho Shibuya on Sakura stunt: “It just broke my heart”

On April 6th, I shared a stunning image of Japan’s iconic cherry blossom trees on my social media, and couldn’t help but weigh in on the recent drama involving Mizkif and Kole from the Tokyo Sims community.

Kaho Shibuya mentioned that she had seen a video featuring content creators she knows, performing pull-ups and gymnastics moves on the limbs of a sakura tree, causing the cherry blossoms to fall.

It was truly disheartening to witness actions like that from someone I recognize, especially while in Japan; usually, it’s strangers I see behaving that way on social media.

Luckily, the post had vanished the following day, suggesting they likely felt remorseful and removed it. As for you, if you ever wish to display your strength by exhibiting your testosterone levels… feel free to pat yourself on the back instead.

Though Kaho Shibuya didn’t explicitly mention them in her tweet, curiosity piqued across the internet, leading to a resurgence of interest in the event online. While some commended her for standing up, others have voiced doubts about why she chose to bring up the Mizkif and Kole incident days later, when the creators had already taken down the videos.

Later in the live stream, Shibuya made additional comments. She stated, “It’s hard to criticize Kick streamers now, considering their past behavior.” This refers to several instances where Kick streamers have been accused of being highly toxic, disregarding various laws, cultural norms, and societal expectations.

Mizkif’s response (or lack of one)

Mizkif hasn’t publicly addressed Kaho Shibuya’s social media post yet, but the Japanese model alleges they exchanged messages on Discord. She claims to have saved a copy of their conversation before Mizkif supposedly erased it from Discord shortly afterwards.

As stated by Shibuya, she proposed to Mizkif the chance for him to clarify his actions or for her to join his live stream, even though she anticipated an unsupportive response from his audience. Kaho Shibuya clarified that this was not a personal attack on him or the other two individuals in the video.

Shibuya stated that he would have reacted similarly to other creators he encountered, as locals in Japan are growing increasingly exasperated by tourists who disrupt Japan’s peace, regardless of whether their actions stem from ill-intentions or ignorance.

Shibuya added that she felt Mizkif response was immature, before reading it out.

Currently, I have John’s accounts from Somalia, and I’m not sure you understand the impact this has had on me. Could you please give me some space?

In 2023, Ramsey Khalid Ismail, better known as Johnny Somali, drew significant criticism for behaving disrespectfully towards Japanese culture while he was living there.

Later on, Kaho Shibuya elaborated about the highly negative reactions she encountered from supporters of the creators.

On the stream, Shibuya stated that some members of their community have shown extremely harmful behavior. However, it seems like none of you have spoken up to counteract the negativity directed towards me. I encourage a more balanced approach in this matter. (Clips from the stream can be found below.)

Why is the cherry blossom (Sakura) important?

In Japan, the Sakura, or cherry blossom, is deeply associated with the nation’s identity, although it’s not officially designated as the national flower. Nevertheless, the tree and its blooms hold significant cultural importance. As spring arrives, thousands of these blossoming cherry trees emerge, prompting people to gather for “Hanami”, a tradition that involves feasting under their enchanting canopy.

Due to the relatively brief lifespan of trees, their blooming is deeply intertwined with Japanese cultural values, symbolizing the transience of life. This explains why such events are widely acknowledged and recognized, though they may not always be explicitly named.

It appears that neither Mizkif nor Kole from Tokyo Sims have responded so far regarding the recent issue. Similar sentiments have been shared by others, emphasizing the importance of cultural sensitivity while traveling overseas. Regrettably, it seems this incident might not be an isolated one.
