Mister Terrific Steals the Spotlight: A Surprising Hit in the New Superman Film!

So, I’m going to need a Mister Terrific spinoff ASAP, James Gunn.

In terms of the forthcoming DC film lineup, I wasn’t exactly overflowing with excitement. I tend to get quite enthusiastic about upcoming Marvel movies and television series, given my penchant for all things superhero within the MCU. Nevertheless, when an opportunity arose to watch the latest Superman movie at an IMAX theater, I couldn’t resist.

That movie was incredible, but let me tell you who truly stole the show – Mister Terrific, portrayed by Edi Gathegi. Honestly, I never thought I would become such a fan, and I feel compelled to share my reasons.

Mister Terrific Was An Absolute Riot

Without a doubt, Mr. Terrific stood out as one of my favorite elements in this movie; there were numerous aspects that I truly enjoyed.

The wide array of characters, featuring many strong female personas in Superman, and the heartwarming topics it tackled, made the film quite appealing. However, what surprised me was finding myself deeply fond of Mister Terrific after watching it.

To set the record straight, I must confess that prior to this movie, my understanding of Mister Terrific was rather scant. I wasn’t anticipating any grandeur or extraordinary feats. My familiarity with the DC universe was mainly confined to the Teen Titans TV series, the Christopher Nolan Batman films, and the pre-existing big-screen DC universe (which I’m grateful has been refreshed in this latest adaptation).

Initially, when I caught a glimpse of the preview for the upcoming Superman film, I felt intrigued, yet not overtly excited, due to my lack of affinity towards the character. Add to that some questionable costume designs (I’m still grappling with Guy Gardner’s bowl cut, but I guess it’s alright), and my enthusiasm waned even further.

Initially, Mister Terrific’s mask, featuring a large ‘T’ over his eyes, nose, and mouth, was somewhat disconcerting, causing me to dismiss him. However, when I watched the movie, he turned out to be incredibly amusing, with a dry wit that was reminiscent of a certain humor you would understand.

At first, Mister Terrific’s mask seemed weird because it had a big ‘T’ over his face, so I didn’t really pay attention. But then when I saw the movie, he was hilarious in this dry, understated way that made me laugh out loud. You know what I mean?

This character is both stoic and incredibly intelligent, but he occasionally delivers hilarious lines or jokes that have you rolling with laughter. I found myself pleasantly surprised by my growing affection for him, and whenever he appeared on screen, I couldn’t help but watch attentively and smile.

Edi Gathegi’s Portrayal Was Killer

Another factor that greatly enhanced Mister Terrific was the portrayal by Edi Gathegi, who made the character endearing and appealing to viewers.

It might be challenging to create an engaging portrayal for a character such as Mister Terrific, who excels in intellect and technology, given his limited emotional range that mainly consists of annoyance, yet this quirkiness adds an amusing touch to his personality.

Instead, Gathegi managed to infuse those scenes with both wit and an unexpected dose of emotional depth when it counted most, which I found incredibly endearing.

It’s fascinating to discover that Gathegi has a versatile acting talent, having been in many movies and TV shows prior to this role. However, it’s only now that I’m fully appreciating his range and skill. He’s known for being in the Twilight series, AMC’s Into the Badlands, and the Blacklist franchise, but he truly excels as Mister Terrific.

I Was So Interested By His Moveset And Powers

If you recognize me, you’d understand that I’m quite fond of a superhero who possesses exceptional intelligence, provided they have a unique trait to set them apart. Characters like Riri Williams from Ironheart, Tony Stark in Iron Man, or even Peter Parker in the Spider-Man films (despite him not being an absolute genius) fit this description perfectly.

Instead of possessing the charm of other intellectually gifted characters we’ve encountered, Mister Terrific truly excels in intelligence, far surpassing any character I’ve grown fond of. He seems to know everything and anything, and it often feels as though he can solve almost any problem – which might be why he goes by the name Mister Terrific.

What I really appreciated about him, too, was that his abilities weren’t confined to intelligence alone, but extended to engineering skills as well. The scene where his mini T-spheres shielded Lois while he effortlessly fended off Lex Luthor’s staff without so much as breaking a sweat or displaying an expression, had me grinning like a delighted child.

His creative blend of technological know-how with martial arts expertise is what truly captivated me, and it made him incredibly entertaining to watch. That’s what left a lasting impression on me.

Don’t Get Me Wrong, I Did Love David Corenswet’s Superman

This whole article delves into Mister Terrific, but let me express that I hold Superman in high regard too, and I admire David Corenswet’s interpretation of him.

This movie makes it challenging not to develop an increasing affection for the superhero, and it succeeds in doing so. One factor that deepened my admiration for him was his interactions with the Justice League, particularly Mister Terrific.

He’s essentially a nice man, and I believe they both share this trait of striving for justice. However, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl might lean slightly towards more violent responses.

I Want To See A Heck Of A Lot More Of Him And Hope He’s Actively A Part Of The ‘Justice Gang’

I need to see more. So much more.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’ve stumbled upon some exciting news: James Gunn might be cooking up standalone stories for Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen! If this becomes a reality, count me in as the very first spectator at the premiere.

I must admit, I wasn’t anticipating to develop such a strong affection for a fresh DC character in this movie, as I was unaware of his existence prior. However, here I am, pleading on all fours for more stories revolving around him. If fortune favors me, we might just get it.

This stirs up even greater anticipation within me for the upcoming DC movies. If they’re just as thrilling as this one, I can hardly contain my excitement to discover which new characters I’ll grow fonder of.
