Mission: Impossible 8’s Rotten Tomatoes Score: 6 Reasons Why It’s Lower
Although Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning serves as a tribute to the entire franchise, it has received a lower Rotten Tomatoes rating compared to the previous films in the series. However, this doesn’t mean that the latest installment of the long-running spy series is poor. In fact, reviews for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning have been quite favorable, with Mary Kassel from Ebaster even giving it an 8 out of 10. As of now, the movie boasts an 80% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (according to Rotten Tomatoes), which is quite impressive.
It’s important to point out that “The Final Reckoning” has a lower rating compared to several other films in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. In fact, it’s the lowest-rated film since “Mission: Impossible III” released in 2006. To put this into perspective, “Ghost Protocol” (2011), “Rogue Nation” (2015), and “Fallout” (2018) all have scores of 94%, while the upcoming film “Dead Reckoning” (2023), which serves as a prequel to “The Final Reckoning,” has a rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, here are six possible reasons why “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s” score is lower than the more recent movies in the series.
6. The First Half Of Mission: Impossible 8 Is Much Weaker Than The Second Half
Mission: Impossible 8 Is Surprisingly Slow
In the film “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which is the longest in the series at 2 hours and 50 minutes, some critics have expressed dissatisfaction that the initial part of the movie lacks enough engagement. According to David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter, a significant portion of the nearly three-hour long film needs to be endured before experiencing much of the thrilling action and stunning locations that are characteristic of the series.
Despite the fact that many would agree that the second half of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is outstanding, some critics mention that they encountered difficulty with the initially sluggish pace of its action-packed plotline. In other words, while the film concludes on a high note, it’s important to remember that Ethan Hunt’s latest mission takes some time to build up speed.
5. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Has Too Much Exposition & Boring Dialogue
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s Story Is Very Complex
In the sequel to “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” the narrative carries forward from its predecessor, necessitating explanatory dialogues in certain scenes. This has been a point of contention for many critics, as evidenced by The Hollywood Reporter’s review that criticized it for “spending too much time rehashing past events, excessive exposition, and tedious cyber-speak“. Overabundance of exposition and dull conversation is one reason why the first half of “The Final Reckoning” seems noticeably slower than its latter parts.
Impossible” series to carry on from where a previous film left off. Not only does it advance the plot of “Dead Reckoning”, but it also links up with earlier films in the franchise, specifically the first and third ones. As a result, the latest release features many flashbacks to previous movies as reminders of key events. However, by including numerous flashbacks and extensive explanations, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” may be too hand-holding, potentially diminishing viewer enjoyment.
4. Mission: Impossible 8 Isn’t As Fun As The Last Few Movies
Mission: Impossible Movies Should Be Fun For Everyone
In my perspective as a fan, I found “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” less engaging compared to its recent predecessors due to its initial pace being somewhat sluggish and overly filled with flashbacks and expository scenes. As David Ehrlich from IndieWire astutely noted in his review, this shift in tempo seems intentional. Interestingly, it appears the latest Mission: Impossible film aims to portray the gravity of our current predicament, where humanity finds itself under the control of a formidable entity that essentially governs the world.
In a departure from previous films in the Mission: Impossible franchise, The Final Reckoning presents a bleaker, dystopian world. Unfortunately, this shift detracts from the series’ trademark charm. It seems that the focus on intricate storylines over thrilling stunts and action sequences, which fans of Mission: Impossible typically value most, may have been missed by Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie in The Final Reckoning. Some critics argue that this emphasis results in The Final Reckoning being the least entertaining installment in the series.
3. Gabriel Isn’t A Very Effective Villain In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Gabriel Was Set Up To Be Very Important To Ethan’s Backstory
It’s worth mentioning that Gabriel, as a lackluster antagonist, was a criticism leveled against Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning by many viewers. According to IndieWire’s review, this flaw was tolerated in Dead Reckoning because it was assumed that his history with Ethan would be delved into more in The Final Reckoning. Unfortunately, the most recent film in the series fails to develop this relationship, leading Ehrlich to argue that Gabriel’s one-dimensional villainy can no longer be justified and is a significant reason why The Final Reckoning falls short among the franchise’s releases.
In essence, while the Entity might be labeled as the main antagonist in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” it’s more accurate to say that Gabriel consistently thwarts Ethan and his team’s efforts throughout the film. Given this recurring role, he should indeed present a formidable adversary. Regrettably, some critics find Gabriel too comical to be perceived as a genuine danger to Ethan. Justin Chang of “The New Yorker” even goes so far as to call Gabriel “unbearably dull.” Ultimately, it seems that many viewers feel let down by Gabriel’s performance as an antagonist in what could potentially be the last installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series.
2. Most Of Mission: Impossible 8’s Supporting Characters Aren’t Interesting Enough
Mission: Impossible 8 Has A Very Large Cast
Critics have also noted that in the film “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” there seems to be an excessive focus on characters like President Sloane, portrayed by Angela Bassett, and other high-ranking U.S. government officials, who may not hold our interest as much as they should given their importance in the storyline.
In addition to the main cast members in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” as noted by IndieWire’s Ehrlich, there seems to be a noticeable change in their character portrayals compared to previous films. For instance, Luther is now more sullen instead of his usual sly self, Benji has become shrill rather than frazzled, and Grace has transformed into a superhuman thief from just being a skilled pickpocket. This suggests that, with the exception of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, there appears to be a debate about whether any characters are staying true to their original selves in this film, which could be disappointing given its potential status as the final installment in the series.
1. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Needed More Action Set Pieces
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Includes Incredible Action, But Not Enough Of It
In the opening segment of this list’s initial point, it’s noted that the second part of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is more captivating than its start. This is noticeable due to the inclusion of the thrilling submarine sequence and the nerve-wracking biplane ending in the second half. Given that the Mission: Impossible series is renowned for its jaw-dropping action, it’s somewhat unexpected that only a few brief fight scenes serve as the action highlights in the first half of the most recent film.
The action in “The Final Reckoning” seems much less prominent when put alongside “Dead Reckoning.” While the previous Mission: Impossible film boasted thrilling scenes like the Rome car chase, Cruise running through Venice’s alleys, Cruise motorcycling off a cliff, and the epic train car sequence, “Dead Reckoning” and other recent Mission: Impossible movies are packed with significant set pieces. On the other hand, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” features fewer notable action sequences, which could be one reason it has a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
