The art gallery D’Stassi Art in London is currently showcasing a groundbreaking solo exhibition titled “Miss Subway NYC” by the renowned graffiti artist Lady Pink from New York. Situated in the bustling Shoreditch district, the gallery has been converted into a fully-tagged subway station, capturing the raw vitality of 1980s underground culture and transporting it to England.

Lady Pink, born in Ecuador and raised in Queens, started graffiti at the age of 15. By the time she was 17, she had already gained recognition, being showcased in the iconic 1981 exhibition “New York/ New Wave” at MoMA PS1 alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Even as a teenager, Lady Pink demonstrated her powerful presence in the art world.

Rather than merely paying homage to 1980s graffiti scene, her artwork functions as an affectionate note to the diverse cast of characters who frequented the subway – musicians with saxophones, the elderly, and the homeless – essentially, New Yorkers who considered the subway their home. “They were the ones I created for,” she stated. “The regular commuters.

Running through late September, the exhibition features original works and new commissions, alongside archival material and personal ephemera from the artist’s early years. “Lady Pink is a true icon,” say D’Stassi Art co-founders Michael Howes and Edward Sanders. “With this immersive NYC subway experience, we want to bring audiences into Lady Pink’s world and show how her legacy continues to influence the culture today.”
