Miranda Otto reveals whether she would ever return to The Lord Of The Rings franchise as new Peter Jackson prequel is in the works

As a dedicated follower of all things Middle-earth and having had the privilege of portraying Éowyn in the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia whenever news about the beloved franchise surfaces. Miranda Otto’s recent return to voice The War of the Rohirrim has rekindled my longing for that extraordinary experience once again.

In a recent interview, it was disclosed if Miranda Otto might contemplate rejoining the world of The Lord of the Rings series.

In the original trilogy, an Australian actress, now 56 years old, played the groundbreaking character of Éowyn, a Rohan shieldmaiden. Notably, she held significant roles in both “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King.

Reflecting on my journey, that pivotal role catapulted me into the limelight globally and remains one of my most cherished experiences throughout my extended stint in Tinseltown.

As I step back into the enchanting realm of Middle-earth, I find myself once again entwined in its magical tapestry. It’s a privilege to lend my voice to the upcoming animated spin-off, The War of the Rohirrim, due for release on December 12th.

Currently, she’s suggested that her involvement with The Lord of the Rings might not be completely finished, implying a potential return to screens portraying Éowyn alongside her initial co-stars.

In a hint at a possible reunion, she shared with the Herald Sun, “I’d be thrilled to collaborate with everyone once more, but only if it aligns with the character’s development.

Looking back at the original trilogy shoot, Miranda confessed that she should have valued the unique, transformative period more, considering it an unrepeatable opportunity.

She shared that she often wished she could have had more company when she was working on set, as the whole experience was truly unique and unprecedented, and she doesn’t believe anyone else will ever get to have that same opportunity.

It was amazing to see so many individuals unite, seemingly defying odds, as they worked on a project that seemed nearly impossible to complete.

It remains undecided if she is willing to participate in director Peter Jackson‘s forthcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off film, as she has not expressed her views on the matter yet.

In 2026, Peter has been assigned the role of producer for the forthcoming prequel titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

During a first-quarter earnings call in May, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, announced the upcoming release of a brand new film.

Other new Lord of the Rings spin-offs are also being developed, with scripts currently being written.

In addition to the search for Gollum, Andy Serkis will make a comeback by taking on multiple roles: he’ll appear on screen, guide the production as the director, and contribute to decision-making behind the scenes as an executive producer in this upcoming Middle-earth feature film.

Once more, Andy is set to collaborate with Peter, the director of every movie in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, adaptations from the novels penned by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The filmmaker’s consistent collaborators, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will play a part throughout the entirety of the project.

Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens stated that they have been dedicated admirers of Professor Tolkien’s extensive mythos for a significant portion of their lives.

They expressed: ‘It’s a great honor and privilege to return to Middle-earth alongside our trusted colleague and partner, Andy Serkis, who still has some matters to settle with the tricky character – Gollum.’

Information regarding the storyline of the next installment in The Lord of the Rings series is presently shrouded in secrecy.

Warner Bros. Discovery finds itself going head-to-head with Amazon Studios, as both companies work on building their respective universes inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” novel collection.

In 2022, Amazon Prime Video debuted The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a series which soon claimed the top spot as the most-watched program on the platform.

In August of this year, the highly anticipated second season of a particularly costly television production was unveiled, receiving outstanding critical acclaim and overwhelming positive responses from viewers.

The expansive television series is reportedly spending over $150 million for each season, and it’s speculated that the streaming platform has allocated a grand total of $1 billion for the entire production.
