Miranda Hart leaves Selena Gomez in tears after revealing singer’s public health battle gave her the ‘courage’ to share her own Lyme disease diagnosis

Miranda Hart nearly made Selena Gomez cry when she shared that Selena’s openness about her health struggles motivated Miranda to disclose her own diagnosis with Lyme disease.
On Friday night, I couldn’t wait for my favorite duo to grace The Graham Norton Show. As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled when the 51-year-old comedian opened up about how the 32-year-old singer’s 2022 documentary, My Mind & Me, inspired her to bare her soul and share her struggles with illness in her latest memoir, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You. It was a truly moving moment for me, as their shared vulnerability only strengthened my admiration for both of them.
For a number of years, Selena Gomez has been open about her struggles with mental health and autoimmune disease lupus. In a documentary, she disclosed that for several years following an episode of psychosis, she had considered suicide. This experience ultimately resulted in her being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Miranda, who had struggled with Lyme disease for thirty years before receiving a diagnosis, shared that watching Selina’s documentary provided her the strength to open up and express her emotions regarding her illness. She continued writing due to this inspiration.
In this personal account, I share my journey through a book that transcends mere illness. It delves into the profound lessons I’ve learned about living life with zest and authenticity, even within challenging circumstances. I’ve discovered a sense of self that allows me to embrace the world wholeheartedly, feeling truly liberated, albeit not entirely healed.
Recently married Miranda, accompanied by Kevin Kline, Zoe Saldana, and Ncuti Gatwa in a cozy setting, additionally disclosed that encountering her spouse was instrumental in overcoming the solitude she experienced following her diagnosis with Lyme disease.
She shared: ‘I had my diagnosis during the pandemic, and it was a very lonely time, so I decided I didn’t want to be alone anymore, so I put out this little prayer with about one percent of hope, but I met someone and got married in July.’
In her upcoming memoir, due for release on October 10th, Miranda, who has been away from the limelight for almost a decade, discusses her struggles and the critical point when her health failed.
While fans know the comedianas Chummy in Call The Midwife and for her cheery self-titled sitcom, Miranda has admitted behind closed doors she was desperately telling doctors: ‘I feel toxic and poisoned’.
It took medics 33 years to discover Miranda had been battling with the bacterial infection Lyme disease, after initially mislabelling her as being agoraphobic – an anxiety disorder characterised by symptoms of anxiety in situations.
She remembers rushing out of a physician’s consultation, weeping profusely, following their announcement that she constantly felt exhausted, which they referred to as ‘TATT’ – ‘Tired All The Time’. They responded, sounding exasperated: ‘I’m honestly at a loss about what to do with you.’
In lockdown, the comic was formally diagnosed with a condition, which she suspects is Lyme Disease, as she experienced severe flu-like symptoms at age 14 while residing in Virginia.
She writes: ‘For me it was the unnerving neurological symptoms that I had got initially, aged fourteen, from Lyme, which I always found particularly hard to deal with. And they got considerably worse as I headed into my forties. As did the fatigue from the cell depletion. Yup, all delightful.’
As soon as she received her diagnosis, she said, “I closed down that Zoom meeting, shut my laptop, and remained motionless, stunned. A torrent of emotions surged through me – I was taken aback, but also felt an immediate pit of sadness and frustration. For over three decades, I’ve known something wasn’t right within me. I remembered every instance where I had shared my concerns with various doctors, “I feel toxic and poisoned,” or “It feels like I have a flu everyday without a fever.
‘(It’s amazing how the body can sometimes literally tell us what’s going on.) I felt anger rising at the times l’d been told I must have agoraphobia.
As I’ve come to understand, it seems that my body responds negatively to excessive energy, bright lights, and loud sounds. Consequently, stepping into an active or stimulating setting can lead to a sudden breakdown for me.
Miranda found it hard to figure out how to tell her followers about her diagnosis, worrying they might think she was always moaning or just feeling exhausted.
However, Lyme Disease took a toll on her health, leading to numerous unending diagnostic procedures. Meanwhile, viewers also began noticing her absence from their television screens.
Previously this year, Selena shared with Rolling Stone that she seems to have reached a satisfying point in her life regarding all aspects.
In 2013, she was officially identified as having the autoimmune condition known as Lupus. Later on, in her October 2015 feature for Billboard, she chose to share this diagnosis with the world.
Back in 2017, she revealed that her kidneys were transplanted when she was only 24 years old, as a result of damage from lupus affecting her organs.
Elsewhere on the show Miranda, who was also joined by Kevin Kline, Zoe Saldana and Ncuti Gatwa on the sofa, shared more details about her intimate wedding, revealing she opted for a ‘Hawaiian’ theme.
Speaking of her wedding in July, she shared: “It was an intimate event, quite unexpectedly having a Hawaiian motif. There were inflatable flamingos, coconut bowling games, and even a steel band playing music.
