Miquita Oliver reveals she was ‘attending therapy sessions drunk’ at the height of her alcoholism after bankruptcy
As an ardent fan of Miquita Oliver, her journey from the dizzying heights of fame to the depths of despair and back again is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Her candidness about her struggles with alcoholism and bankruptcy, particularly her attendance at therapy sessions while under the influence, speaks volumes about her courage and resilience.
Miquita Oliver openly shared that she used to attend therapy appointments under the influence of alcohol during the peak of her addiction, as she honestly talked about her battles.
Previously, the presenter, who is now 40 years old, acknowledged that she had lost all her possessions due to bankruptcy and alcohol abuse when she failed to settle a £174,000 tax debt in 2012.
On the recent installment of the Miss Me? podcast, hosted by Lily Allen and a dear friend, they shared insights from their personal therapy journeys.
One listener called in to asked if there was a particular event that made them start therapy.
Miquita confessed: ‘I sought help from a therapist during the peak of my alcohol addiction in my early thirties, but it wasn’t effective as I attended the sessions under the influence of alcohol.’
‘That is a whole different level of performative therapy. I was trying to pretend that I hadn’t been drinking.’
She went on saying, “It truly felt senseless, and upon reflecting on how terrible it was, I realized that attending therapy while intoxicated was the reason I abstained from drinking for a short while.
‘But then I found a really good therapist who did help me change my life, and continue to change my life.’
In a 2013 episode of BBC Three’s Young, British & Broke, she admitted that she had been too embarrassed to disclose her financial difficulties to anyone for an extended period of approximately two years.
At the age of 17, I was making money that I wasn’t skilled at managing, and before I realized it, I owed a significant amount in taxes.
It seemed as though I was suffocating and drowning, overwhelmed by fear regarding my future. For a span of two years, I chose to keep this burden hidden from others.
‘When I was declared bankrupt it felt like I was in a financial mess I would never get out of.’
As a lifestyle connoisseur reflecting on my past, I, too, experienced fame from an early age and indulged in endless social gatherings – a fact I’ve shared candidly through my podcast.
Despite standing by each other during numerous challenging periods, their loyalty has not always been consistent when it comes to matters concerning men.
Previously this year, during an episode of their podcast titled “Miss Me?”, Miquita opened up about a rather clingy phase that occurred prior to Lily gaining widespread musical acclaim. At that point, Miquita confessed to having feelings for someone.
Speaking about her time hosting Popworld on Channel 4’s Sunday morning music show during the early 2000s, Miquita shared: ‘I had a crush on a popular artist. I informed Lily of my feelings. Soon after, Lily managed to win over this artist at a festival in Japan.’
Since Lily hadn’t achieved success as an artist, she secured a position in artist relations to gain access behind the scenes at concerts instead.
In the podcast, the discussion between Lily and Miquitia grew a bit strained when Lily expressed doubt about whether Miquitia had clearly expressed her feelings towards that particular man.
As a devoted admirer, I openly confess that I journeyed to Japan with the intention of securing my feelings for him, expressing it as ‘sealing the deal’. To clarify, he had piqued my interest, leading me to take action and pursue my own happiness. In addition, I hold the belief that pop stars are a legitimate target of affection, much like they’re open game, without any reservations or qualms about it.
As they reminisced about the event, the duo chuckled, but Miquita confided that she hadn’t spoken with Lily for a full half-year following the occurrence.
Miquita said: ‘If I didn’t hate you so much for it, I would have applauded you. It was admirable.’
