Minecraft opens with record-breaking $157 million domestic box office
The release of “A Minecraft Film” brought a significant boost to the struggling cinemas, setting new records for both domestic and international sales with an impressive $157 million in the U.S. and $144 million abroad.
In a surprising turn of events, the movie featuring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge exceeded predictions, nearly doubling initial forecasts for its pre-weekend earnings. Not only did it claim the number one spot among video game adaptations, but it also outperformed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” launch in 2023, raking in an impressive $146.4 million, surpassing that title’s opening gross.

In simpler terms, since there haven’t been many big blockbusters or successful films, local cinema owners are finding it tough. As of now, the box office earnings have dropped by 11% compared to the same timeframe last year.
2011’s video game adaptation has proven successful for Warner Bros., marking the biggest domestic box office debut of the year for the struggling studio. The movie is said to have had a production cost of approximately $150 million, not including promotional expenditures.
It is the first film of the year to gross over $100 million domestically.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed immense joy as the worldwide audience warmly embraced the “Minecraft Movie”. They noted that the movie’s long voyage to the screen was meticulously handled by Jesse Ehrman and his team at WBP, and they are ecstatic that their hard work has led to such a fantastic reaction.
Last month, domestic box office generated just $410 million, according to Comscore.
According to Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, “A Minecraft Movie” might lower the current year-to-date shortfall by about 7 to 8 percentage points. As of the weekend, this deficit was running 13% behind the 2024 figures, but with its impressive performance, it’s expected to end up being only around a 5% year-to-date deficit as of today.

It appears that Warner Bros. Film Studio has been experiencing a series of flops at the box office with films like ‘Mickey 17’ and ‘The Alto Knights.’ Could their upcoming projects, such as ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ bring about a change in their fortunes?
The film reportedly cost $150 million to produce.
Over the weekend, “A Working Man,” an action-packed collaboration between Amazon and MGM starring Jason Statham, earned $7.2 million. Meanwhile, “The Chosen: The Last Supper,” (Season 5) Part 2, a religious themed production by Fathom Entertainment, premiered and secured the third spot with an opening of $7 million.
In a more casual and straightforward rephrasing, the statement could be: “Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White’ is still experiencing a decline, earning around $6 million during its third week in cinemas.
