A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess has defended the behaviour of fans during screenings.
On TikTok, you’ll find numerous clips of movie enthusiasts attending screenings of a widely acclaimed film, and they erupt in excitement by tossing vast quantities of popcorn when the Chicken Jockey makes an appearance. The character’s arrival is signaled on-screen with Jack Black’s energetic announcement.
In some movie theaters, they’ve attempted to forbid such behavior due to its disruption, while others have even promoted it through exclusive screenings – although recording the screen during these events technically qualifies as movie piracy.
In a conversation with the New York Times, Hess shared his thoughts (or insights) about the controversial topic, describing it as an authentic celebration.
He expressed to the media, “It’s incredibly amusing!” or “It’s hilarious beyond belief!”, he said. “It’s been an absolute riot. Every time someone shares a fresh video with me, I can’t help but laugh until I nearly run out of breath.
He went on to say, “The very act of people creating memories while going to the cinema – that’s the essence. That’s the reason we put in all this effort.
He remarked, “I would have never expected such an overwhelming display of excitement, joy, and madness like this.” He assured everyone, “There’s no risk of anyone getting injured by the popcorn.
When I take my children to the cinema, it seems as if there’s an unspoken rule for popcorn to cover the floor rather than our laps. Strangely enough, no one is intentionally tossing it, yet somehow it always ends up scattered around us.
Speaking as an ardent fan, I was recently asked what makes that particular moment in Minecraft so electrifying for everyone. To put it simply, it’s a perfect storm of the scarcity of the Chicken Jockey, which is quite unusual in the game, and the dramatic flair Jack Black brings when he announces its arrival.
Jack expresses his words with an intense fervor, as if every line he speaks in the movie carries immense significance, as though it were the most crucial message anyone has ever received.
