“Millennium Falcon Has Sailed”: Star Wars Alum Won’t Return To Disney Franchise After $392M Flop

An actor from the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story recently shared whether they’d be willing to reprise their role in future Star Wars films, despite the movie not performing well in theaters.

Emilia Clarke, who played Qi’ra in the movie Solo, jokingly told Variety that she probably won’t be returning to the Star Wars universe. She used the expression “That Millennium Falcon has sailed” to suggest the opportunity has passed.

The actress also mentioned that many fans have expressed wanting to see her reprise the role, and she’s open to the possibility if Disney and Lucasfilm were to approach her with an offer.

It seems unlikely, but I’ll keep you updated. Many fans have expressed interest in seeing the Millennium Falcon again, so it’s a possibility we’re considering.

I remember reading an interview with Clarke from 2023 where she was asked about potentially coming back to Star Wars. She basically said she’d be open to it, and it reminded me of what she’s been saying recently!

Last year, Jonathan Kasdan, a writer on the film Solo, said he didn’t know if any of its characters would appear again. However, he suggested that short, special projects—like Disney+’s Werewolf By Night—could be a good way for Lucasfilm to bring those characters back.

Following the success of Rogue One, Solo was the second Star Wars film released that wasn’t part of the main Skywalker story. After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, they broadened the Star Wars universe, beginning with a new trilogy: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

Between the main films, two spin-offs, Rogue One and Solo, came out. Rogue One was a big success, earning over $1 billion and receiving an 84% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Solo wasn’t as well-received.

The movie Solo, starring Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, tells the story of his exciting early adventures before the main Star Wars films. However, the production of the movie was troubled by difficulties behind the scenes.

Originally, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were set to direct the movie, but they were later replaced by Ron Howard. Howard then had to significantly re-film many scenes, which caused the movie’s production costs to soar to around $275 million.

Released in May 2018, Solo earned $392 million in theaters but didn’t make a profit – a first for any Star Wars film. Reviews were mixed, with a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show featured a strong cast including Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Thandiwe Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany, and Joonas Suotamo.

By the time Emilia Clarke took on the role in this film, she was already a household name, thanks to her incredible performance as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. That show, which premiered in 2018 and ran for eight seasons, really put her on the map. I remember watching and being consistently impressed – and the industry clearly agreed, showering her with nominations for major awards like the Emmys, SAG Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards throughout its run.

Following her roles in Game of Thrones and Solo, Emilia Clarke appeared in films such as Last Christmas and The Pod Generation. She also returned to television with the Marvel series Secret Invasion and the Peacock thriller Ponies.

Over the years, she’s appeared in major franchises like Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, she’s repeatedly stated that she doesn’t expect to reprise her role in Star Wars.

Following a break after Solo: A Star Wars Story and the end of the Skywalker Saga, Disney has returned to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu. While the new film earned $98 million during its opening Memorial Day weekend, that was slightly less than the $103 million Solo made during the same period in 2018.
