The OC was one of the most popular teen shows of the 2000s.
The show, which aired for four seasons from 2003 to 2007, chronicled the exciting lives of wealthy teenagers in Orange County, along with the dramas of their parents.
Melinda Clarke’s character, Julie Cooper, was a popular figure on the show. Known for her ambition and scheming, Julie was the mother of Marissa Cooper and famously worked her way up from a humble background – a trailer park – to a life of luxury with her husband, Jimmy Cooper.
People fondly remember the show, but millennials were recently shocked to learn that Melinda was only 34 years old when the first season aired. Many admitted they’d always assumed she was much older, in her late 40s or 50s.
Instagram comedian Helen McPherson shared surprising news online, prompting many fans to react. One commenter wrote, “I need to book a Botox appointment… I always thought people looked their best in their late 40s and early 50s.”

Julie Cooper was a central figure in the show. She grew up with a difficult background in Riverside, but moved to Newport Beach after becoming pregnant with Marissa at age 18. Four years later, she had another daughter named Kaitlin.
Another surprise came with the revelation that Kelly Rowen, who played Kirsten Cohen, was only 36 years old when the first season aired.
Helen was reflecting on how youthful Julie Cooper appeared. She thought Julie looked incredibly glamorous, like she was somewhere in her late 40s or early 50s, and she was impressed by how well-maintained she seemed.
You’re actually older now than Julie Cooper and Kirsten Cohen were when the show started! I looked it up – Julie was 35 and Kirsten was 36 during the first season.
Okay, so I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz online about Julie Cooper’s age, and honestly, it’s hilarious! So many people are commenting that they thought the character was much older – like in her late 40s or early 50s – and are completely shocked to learn she’s actually 35! I’m getting messages from people saying they just turned 35 and can’t believe it, and they’re refusing to accept it! It’s a fun reminder that age is just a number, and we all perceive it differently. It’s really sparked a conversation about expectations and how we see women on screen, and I’m loving it!
I seriously can’t believe this! It’s shocking, honestly worse than realizing Marv was older in ‘Home Alone’! I just found out Homer Simpson was only 34 when the show started, and my mind is blown. I always pictured them as being way older, like in their fifties! It’s so strange to think they could have realistically been teen moms… it just feels wrong.
I’m a year younger than you, and we’ve just started watching The O.C. together with my 11-year-old. It’s funny, even rewatching it now, I still picture the characters as being in their mid-forties!

I really need to schedule a Botox appointment. Looking back at some old photos, I realize a certain style made me look much older than I was – and even at the time, I felt that way! Honestly, most of the time as an adult, I’ve felt like things just aren’t quite right for my age. I’m turning 35, and I’m not exactly thrilled about it.
Just a heads up, this post might be upsetting. I’m feeling down after turning 38.
Although some viewers were surprised by what they saw, dedicated fans noted that the story revealed Julie was a teenage mother, which explained her age and fit with the show’s narrative.
Some viewers pointed out that Julie was 17 when Marissa’s mother was born, making her 34 during the first season. They were surprised others missed the show’s repeated mentions of Julie becoming pregnant at 18 and Kirsten graduating from college around the same time.
Didn’t Julie have Marissa when she was eighteen? That seems like a mistake in the storyline, since she’s supposed to be around the same age as Jimmy and Kirsten. Or did everyone just have children at a young age?

In 2021, Melinda discussed her famous character, explaining that ‘Julie began as someone who seemed shallow, but we eventually discover she’s much more complex than that…’
This character is a relatable person figuring things out as she navigates life’s big questions. The loss of her child especially highlights her vulnerability and makes her feel very human. It was a deeply satisfying role to portray.
When asked if viewers compare her to her character, Julie, she expressed hope that the show demonstrates she’s quite different. She also shared that this project has been the most rewarding of her career.
I’ve had some fun playing different roles – everything from a powerful dominatrix to characters in sci-fi worlds. It makes me think of Julie, and honestly, her energy reminds me a lot of Mindy! But that whole high-powered world? It’s just not for me. I really prefer the simple things and honestly, I’m way too laid-back to be like Julie Cooper. She’s a super early riser – 5 AM early! – and that’s just not my speed.
