An authority on nonverbal communication is offering insights into the somewhat uncomfortable encounter between Miley Cyrus and her former boyfriend Patrick Schwarzenegger, which took place at the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night.

In a private moment at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the ex-pair appeared to cross paths and run into each other, leading many social media users to speculate that Miley was intentionally avoiding the 31-year-old actress from “White Lotus”.

Based on Judi James’ analysis, the photograph indicates that Miley Cyrus, aged 32, and her former partner, whose current fiancee Abby Champion was conspicuously missing, displayed significantly contrasting emotions upon their encounter.

In conversation with DailyMail.com, James pointed out that running into an ex at such a high-profile event could create a complex scenario regarding appropriate non-verbal cues.

She observes that Patrick’s eyes sparkle with enthusiasm, and his cheeks expand into a smile that appears to be expressing gratitude.

However, the expert shared with DailyMail.com that it seemed like the mutual feeling wasn’t present for the artist known as the Wrecking Ball singer.

‘Miley seems oblivious to his warm and maybe encouraging gaze,’ James explains.

Despite sporting sleek, sharp black shades, the singer-songwriter seemed to stroll diagonally, rather than straight toward, her former boyfriend.

James observed, ‘It appears as if she’s looking straight at the camera through her sunglasses, and her smile suggests enjoyment rather than a lingering sadness.’

Miley Cyrus and Patrick Schwarzenegger were romantically linked around the start of the 2010s, allegedly during a time when she was separated from her boyfriend at that point and later husband, Liam Hemsworth.

2014 saw the start of a deeper connection between them, however, this relationship didn’t last long. Miley Cyrus ended things with Patrick Schwarzenegger in March 2015, following reports that he was seen doing body shots with an unidentified woman, as mentioned by Us Weekly.

It appears that the actress and singer attempted to mend things with Patrick following their split in late 2014, but by April 2015, after only five months as a couple, it seemed like they were not destined to be together again. Since then, there haven’t been any substantial indications that they plan on reconciling.

Later on, Miley got back together with Liam, and they tied the knot in 2018. However, Liam declared their split the next year and eventually filed for divorce, which became official in 2020.

At the Met Gala, Miley donned an exclusive Alaïa dress crafted by Pieter Mulier, and topped off her look with stunning Cartier jewels.

Patrick sported a large, striped Balmain black suit, the jacket seemingly tucked into his loose-fitting pants.

He donned a snug, sunny-hued satin shirt with ribbing, and heaccessorized with a spacious burgundy leather purse adorned with a grand golden buckle, which coordinated with his belt made of the same material.

As spectators admired the peculiar interaction between Miley and Patrick at the Met Gala, some speculated that Abby Champion’s absence from the event could hint at potential issues within their relationship.
