Miles Morales Adidas Suit in Spider-Man 2 Draws Backlash from Fans — and Even His Voice Actor

In simpler terms, products often harmoniously blend with entertainment, much like peanut butter and jelly, a cold drink on a hot day, or E.T. with Reese’s Pieces. This symbiotic relationship is generally pleasant, except when it feels forced, similar to Venom. When Insomniac Games designed Miles Morales‘ Spider-Man costume reminiscent of an Adidas tracksuit in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, some gamers were taken aback, finding it as unexpected and off-putting as putting sardines on a campfire treat (s’mores) or seeing an advertisement for Ovaltine in a treasure decoder ring.

In the Spider-Man 2 PS5 game, I don’t object to the “Adidas outfit” on its own. However, the way it is featured in the game makes it stand out significantly – it’s the crucial mission and it seems quite promotional, like an advertisement. (laugh out loud)

If he won this through a contest or some other means, well, that’s just how it is. I think they didn’t treat him fairly, given his unique style. (In my opinion)

Indeed, it seems that not only the players found issue with the outfit, but also the voice actor of Miles Morales in the game expressed concerns about the Adidas suit.

The Voice Actor Speaks Out

The “Evolved Suit” for Miles Morales originated from a cooperation between Insomniac Games and Adidas. In 2023, Adidas revealed this partnership, hinting that the residents of New York in the game would sport their products. It wasn’t until later that it was disclosed that Miles Morales and Adidas were connected.

In a statement, Shane Jocham, the senior director of market strategy and partnerships at Adidas, mentioned that the link between “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” and this line is incredibly unique, enabling them to explore numerous design elements from Marvel’s New York City in both apparel and the game itself.

I was part of the crowd who couldn’t help but notice that Adidas unveiled a line of shoes inspired by iconic Marvel characters, Spider-Man and Venom. However, it seemed like everyone around me was particularly excited about the introduction of Miles Morales in the Adidas range.

User /u/JaMoraht shared on the /r/SpidermanPS4 subreddit that during the Canadian Fan Expo, they got an opportunity to inquire from Miles Morales voice actor, Nadji Jeter, regarding the Adidas outfit in the game.

“He feels the same way about the suit, implying Adidas might be at fault. On top of that, he was not pleased with Miles’ new hairstyle, arguing that it hinders the possibility of maintaining a secret identity.

Playing Games

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the focus shift towards Miles Morales drew some controversy, as Adidas suit notwithstanding. YouTube personality Endymion commented on X that “Peter Parker is battling a symbiote, while Miles Morales is assisting his schoolmates with their projects and various tasks dreamed up by Insomniac’s writers.

In simpler terms, it seems unfair that Miles Morales is the one who defeats both Venom and Harry, considering he only interacts with Harry once at a fair and has a single phone conversation throughout the whole game, whereas Peter Parker is down for the count. This decision appears unreasonable to me, but I’m not apologizing for my opinion.

Peter is over here dealing with the symbiote while Miles is helping his school…

In essence, it was Miles Morales wearing the Adidas Evolved Suit that garnered the most attention. Regrettably, as Dexerto reported, many players found this costume underwhelming. Despite its release at a crucial point in Miles’ storyline where he’s carving out his own identity, it seems some fans need time to embrace the new design. Here’s to hoping that with time, the Adidas Evolved Suit will gain broader acceptance among fans.

A Line as Thin as a Spider’s Web

Since 1984, when the FCC loosened regulations on advertising in children’s entertainment, opening the door for lengthy toy commercials like Transformers, the distinction between storytelling and marketing pitch has become increasingly blurred. Is Miles Morales endorsing Adidas, or is Adidas promoting Spider-Man? The answer appears to be both. However, one might question if this relationship is mutually beneficial.

In simpler terms, gamers often struggle when a brand’s presence overshadows the character’s identity, such as Venom or Adidas dominating Spider-Man. As Jeffrey Katzenberg, a previous Disney executive, once noted, “Characters are the most important aspect.” When Miles Morales is dressed in an Adidas outfit that doesn’t align with fans’ perception of the character, and they perceive him as being made to conform to marketing demands, they express dissatisfaction. Now, even the voice actor shares this view.

Swinging Ahead

Following the confirmation that Insomniac Games is working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, which reportedly is in its early stages of production, it will be intriguing to discover the partnerships Insomniac might secure and if they choose to swap Miles Morales’ current sponsor (Adidas) for a brand more attractive to gamers.

According to reports, when user JaMoraht questioned about potential changes in upcoming games, Jeter is said to have chuckled, expressing his confidence that they would revert to the initial costume.
