Mike Greenberg to host ESPN's 'Sunday NFL Countdown' after Sam Ponder layoff

As a sports enthusiast who has grown up with Mike Greenberg and his iconic radio show “Mike & Mike,” I am beyond thrilled to see him taking over as the host of “Sunday NFL Countdown” on ESPN. With an impressive career spanning decades, Greenberg’s experience, wit, and deep-rooted passion for sports make him an ideal choice for this coveted position.

ESPN has announced that Mike Greenberg is taking over from Sam Ponder as the host of “Sunday NFL Countdown”. This change comes after Ponder and show’s analyst, Robert Griffin III, were let go by the network last week.

57-year-old Greenberg is primarily recognized for his long-running sports talk radio show, “Mike & Mike,” alongside former NFL player Mike Golic. This popular program aired from 1999 until 2017. In 2016, they were honored by the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and in 2018, they were inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

Currently, Mike Greenberg is occupied with hosting the daily show “Get Up” on ESPN, as well as “Greeny” on ESPN Radio. Additionally, he takes on the role of host for the NFL Draft on ESPN.

Apart from being an active writer, Greenberg is renowned for his works. His debut book, humorously titled “Why My Wife Thinks I’m an Idiot,” published in 2007, was a memoir about his life as a sports enthusiast and husband. This book stayed on the New York Times’ Best Sellers List for five weeks and even earned a nomination for a Quill Award. In the year 2010, Greenberg collaborated with Golic to write “Mike & Mike’s Rules for Sports and Life,” which climbed up to the third spot on the Times’ Best Sellers List.

As a passionate reader and cinephile, I’ve got quite the literary resume under my belt. Two novels, “All You Could Ask For” and “My Father’s Wives,” are mine, penned down by my own hand. Additionally, two years ago, I teamed up with another writer to create a captivating collection of short sports essays titled “Got Your Number: The Greatest Sports Legends and the Numbers They Own.”

On Sunday mornings, Greenberg’s latest role will see NFL insider Adam Schefter and ex-players Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, Rex Ryan, and Alex Smith joining him. Coverage from games will be provided by Jeff Darlington, Dan Graziano, Kimberley A. Martin, Sal Paolantonio, and Lindsey Thiry.

The source familiar with the situation but not allowed to speak publicly referred to the dismissals of Ponder and Griffin as a strategic business decision. Before the end of this fiscal year in September, both individuals will receive all that they are entitled to under their contracts and will be compensated accordingly. At the time of their termination, Griffin had two years left on his contract, while Ponder had one more year remaining. Both received salaries in the seven-figure range.

The source familiar with the reductions stated that this situation was similar to previous talent dismissals, essentially being a straightforward financial business move.

Some people believe that ESPN’s former sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, among others, suggested that Ponder was fired partly due to her stance that transgender women should not compete in female sports. In 2023, Ponder tweeted her opinion that it isn’t fair for biologically male individuals to participate in women’s sports, as the reason for separating them initially and the necessity of Title IX.

Instead, Tafoya admitted during a Fox News interview that replacing Ponder with a high-profile hire could be justified three weeks before the NFL season. “I can’t fathom why they would make such a move so near to the season and generate so much buzz,” she stated, “if not to introduce the new host and provide them with considerable attention.”

Greenberg is undoubtedly deserving of our focus as the next potential host. Starting on September 8 and ending on Super Bowl Sunday in New Orleans, February 9, “Sunday NFL Countdown” enters its 40th season. This three-hour pregame show, initially known as “NFL GameDay,” first aired in 1985.
