Mike Flanagan enters the DC Universe, will write script for Clayface movie

As a longtime fan of Mike Flanagan’s work, it’s always a thrill to see him take on new projects. His ability to breathe fresh life into established properties like Stephen King adaptations, “The Exorcist,” and now DC’s Clayface, is truly remarkable. It seems the man can do no wrong!

Renowned horror director Mike Flanagan has selected his upcoming venture, an intriguing project indeed. Known for his exceptional work, Flanagan has recently completed ‘The Life of Chuck’, an adaptation from Stephen King’s short story with the same title. Apart from working on a new series based on Carrie and a reboot of The Exorcist, he is also reportedly going to pen the script for DC’s upcoming Clayface movie.

The film was unveiled following the acclaim of HBO’s show “The Penguin,” which shares its universe with Matt Reeves’ Batman portrayed by Robert Pattinson.

As per the report, Flanagan initially proposed a Clayface project to DC Studios and has been keen on producing a Clayface movie since 2021. He expressed his intention to create it as a self-contained production, focusing particularly on a “horror/thriller/tragedy” theme.

Due to his current workload involving multiple projects, coordinating with Flanagan’s schedule has been quite challenging. However, it appears that he is now confirmed to pen the script for the upcoming film. Regrettably, his plate is already full with The Exorcist and Carrie, so he won’t be able to assume directing responsibilities as well.

Even though DC is sort of juggling two different universes between Reeves’ and the recently-restarted DCU helmed by James Gunn (which kicked off with Creature Commandos), it sounds like the Clayface movie will be part of the official DCU canon.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that Clayface ranks pretty high among Batman’s rogue gallery due to his unique ability to reshape himself based on his clay-like form. He’s made quite the rounds in various DC video games and animated series, but unfortunately, live-action appearances have been scarce, popping up only in shows like Birds of Prey, Gotham, and Pennyworth. However, he’s made a mark in the DC animated universe, appearing in productions like the ongoing shows Harley Quinn and Creature Commandos, with Alan Tudyk lending his voice to this shape-shifting villain.

It’s worth noting that Gunn previously stated that actors in the DCU would typically portray a single character. However, Alan Tudyk, who voices Clayface, also takes on the roles of Dr. Phosphorus and scientist Will Magnus. In a recent post on X (previously Twitter), Gunn clarified that this rule refers to main castings, implying that minor roles may not be subject to this restriction. Therefore, while Tudyk might play Clayface in live-action, it’s still uncertain at this point.
