Midsomer Murders star takes on “iconic role” as he returns to play different character in “twisted” mystery

Daniel Casey will be playing the main character in the UK tour of “Midsomer Murders: The Deaths at Badger’s Drift.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the live stage adaptation of Caroline Graham’s novel “The Killings at Badger’s Drift,” which also serves as the basis for the beloved ITV series “Midsomer Murders,” is about to make its grand entrance at Richmond Theatre starting from 24th October. The show promises to captivate audiences until April 2026!

Confirmation has come in that the actor who portrayed Sergeant Gavin Troy on Midsomer Murders from 1997 to 2008, Casey, is now stepping into the role of Inspector Tom Barnaby for the stage adaptation.

He expressed that he didn’t anticipate returning to the peculiar and captivating realm of Midsomer, filled with its eccentric personalities and their hidden, sinister mysteries, as stated.

It was quite unexpected to be given the chance to portray the renowned Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby in the upcoming stage version of “The Killings at Badger’s Drift“.

During the rehearsals for the play, it became evident that the characters possessed a natural flair for drama, making them ideal for performance on stage.

Reminiscing about my joyful career phase portraying Sgt Troy, it’s heartwarming to recall the fantastic experience I shared with the talented John Nettles. Stepping into his role as Barnaby is a mix of being slightly apprehensive yet thrilled at the same time.

The actor who portrayed Tom Barnaby on the TV show from 1997 to 2011, John Nettles, also shared his thoughts on the recent casting announcement, expressing: “It’s fantastic that the original mystery of ‘Midsomer’ will be unraveled by Daniel in this new stage adaptation of ‘Badger’s Drift’.

Daniel breathed vibrant life into the character of young Troy during the initial television series based on the book, and it’s a joy to see him take the helm for this stage adaptation’s investigative plotline.

His background in theater is impressive, and he was fortunate enough to learn detective skills from an exceptional mentor during his training years.

The play is characterized as a traditional mystery story, focusing around the demise of a cherished, unmarried woman named Emily Simpson.

In the scenario where Lucy Bellringer, Emily’s friend, insists on believing her death wasn’t an accident, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy are summoned to examine the case. This leads them to unveil a realm of concealed emotions, forgotten pasts, and lethal competitions.
