Microsoft is exploring ways to employ a fresh, innovative AI technology named ‘Muse,’ with the aim of preserving their collection of timeless Xbox games from the past.
Fatima Kardar, Vice President of Xbox’s AI in Gaming Division, stated that many timeless games connected to outdated hardware are now unplayable for most individuals. With this innovation, we are investigating how Muse might revitalize older games from our studios and optimize them for any device.
Microsoft explains that Muse has the ability to produce “visuals for games and/or actions for controllers,” which it illustrated using training data from “Bleeding Edge“, a 2020 multiplayer action game developed by Ninja Theory. Subsequently, the discussion shifted towards potential applications in game preservation.
Microsoft expressed that they think this might significantly alter the way timeless games are kept and enjoyed in the future, making them playable on various screens using Xbox. The idea of potentially reviving forgotten games due to time and technological progression being accessible via Xbox is an intriguing prospect for them.
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer shares a similar level of excitement about the potential for game preservation that Muse offers. In other words, it might signify the commencement of the long-awaited era when complete backwards compatibility becomes available on Xbox gaming platforms.
Spencer noted that discussing game preservation, which involves models learning every aspect of a game without requiring the original engine or hardware to run, creates numerous possibilities for us.
