Microsoft announces more layoffs, bringing 2024 total to over 2,500
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for those affected by these latest Microsoft layoffs. I remember the thrill of seeing Activision Blizzard join forces with Xbox and the anticipation that brought about new games on Game Pass. But the reality is harsh, and it’s heartbreaking to see so many talented individuals losing their jobs in an industry that thrives on creativity and passion.
Microsoft has experienced layoffs once more, resulting in approximately 650 positions being terminated as part of a strategic shift aimed at achieving long-term prosperity.
Once more, a significant tech, gaming, and software company is reducing its workforce by dismissing around 650 employees. Earlier this year, nearly 2,000 people were let go, bringing the total number of layoffs at Microsoft to approximately 2,500.
2022 also marks the year when Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was finalized. Since then, their games have been made available on various gaming platforms. For instance, Call of Duty is now accessible through Game Pass, and a myriad of other positive developments make this situation feel almost unreal.
Over 600 supporting and corporate roles removed through more Microsoft layoffs
On September 12, 2024, an important announcement was made early in the morning. An internal memo, later leaked and widely spread on social media, originated from Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming and a key figure at Xbox.
He states the goal is to organize the business for its long term success. And that Microsoft will be supporting them with extended healthcare, severance, and other services to help with their transition out of the company.
To streamline our organizational setup following a merger and ensure the longevity of our gaming business, we’ve decided to reduce around 650 positions within Microsoft Gaming. The majority of these affected roles are in corporate and support departments.
– Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming
2024 saw Microsoft’s first significant round of job cuts primarily affecting Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard divisions. At least one Blizzard game was shelved during this period. However, recent layoffs are more focused on positions within Activision Blizzard. Contrary to speculation, as stated by Spencer, no games are being scrapped due to these job cuts.
“Today, there are no plans to cancel any games, devices, or experiences nor to shut down any studios in these changes.
– Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming
Video game production and its market continue to flourish, as they consistently introduce fresh releases and consoles. However, it’s important to note that not every situation is clear-cut, particularly with some eagerly awaited games that unfortunately fail to materialize.
Regardless, you never want to see people lose their jobs in an industry where every position matters. Where every ounce of support is necessary to the success of a piece of hardware or a game. We hope this is the last we hear of layoffs in 2024.
